First of all I begin the first class with some little source of humor. This puts everyone at ease and helps with the task of making the syllabus clear. Just say the words "go over the syllabus now" and you can hear the groans come forth. I go over it all myself first to make sure I understand it all and then I highlight the important parts, especially the requirements so that I don't have to go over it word for word. I then ask questions and encourage feedback on each requirement. These students are very bright and usually will pick up on some things that I have missed that cause confusion. So we clear it all up and then I write the key requirements on the board so that there are no misunderstandings along with my phone # and school email just in case someone still didn't "get it", they can contact me later with questions. When they know I am available and start to trust me i find that is the first step to success.
Thank you, Shirley

To make course requirements clear; first discuss the course requirements and answer any uncertainity questions from students and make sure that everyone understands the course requirement before you move on to the first lesson.

Hi Brenda,
Clarity is the key to understanding. For some students they need to hear information more than one time.

Patricia Scales

you give guidance to the students and have clear documentation to verify any misunderstandings that may arise later.

Giving clear and concise instructions to students. Reapeating the information as often as possible helps also.

Giving them enough time and make sure they understand it.

The syllabus is the most important source of information in any course. This is the document that students will call you on. As an instructor, if you are unsure when a student asks a question, you can always refer back to the syllabi, and noone will feel as though you were playing favorites with anyone.

Make sure ther are clear direction in the syalbus.

By stating them clearly in the syllabus and discussing them when I go over the syllabus in class on the first day of class and allowing class discussions to clarify items that are unclear.

Hi Dorian,
Awesome! Your students have no excuse of saying, they did not know. You go above and beyond by providing a calendar as well.

having the syllabus ready for the first day of class is the most important part of seeting up the students for success.the syllabus must contain all of the infromation that is goingt o be covered during the academic term.

Hi Gina,

Hi Inga,
I require my students have a calendar to write down deadlines.

Patricia Scales

Hi Sonia ,
A thorough review of course requirements is a must! Students have greater clarity when requirements are given in full details by the instructor.

Patricia Scales

Hi Lauren,
It is crucial to let students know on Day 1 exactly what is expected of them. Students should always have clear requirements from the instructor.

Patricia Scales

On the first day of class I give out a dated outline. It details each class - what topic will be covered, what assignment is due and when projects are due. This gives students a class by class schedule of what is going to happen. This way they know what took place if they have to be out and what to expect each class meeting.

Give my students an assignment requirements at beginning of the week with dates on.

Let students know they need to follow the course requirments by making sure they know class time book assignments, deadlines, and also attendance. Basicly review the course requiremnts and if anyone has question to ask.
