Hi Jack,
I love your perspective! It is simple, make it plain and hold students accountable!

Hi Rodney,
Super! Our students need as much clarity as possible in order to succeed.

Hi Gail,
Our students just do not read! I go over the syllabus verbatim on day 1 and have a question/answer session to ensure clarity.
Patricia Scales
I use the syllabus and learning objectives. But somehow the students don't read the syllabus or the learning objectives! Again, it comes down to how clear I can be. Somehow the communication doesn't seem to get across
When I present course work to students I explain exactly what I want or am looking for in the assignment. Also, I entertain any questions about the assignment if they are still unclear.
by telling them up front and explaning to them what is required of them and holding them to it
Hi Linda,
Examples add great clarity for students. Most students are visual learners, and they grasp what needs to be done when they can see an example.

Hello,
I think it is very important to make it clear what is expected on day one of the course. This allows students to better prepare for assignments. It is also a good idea to give students and example of what you expect from them. If they are writing a paper, you can give them a paper of a student from a previous sememster who received an A.
Hi Dana,
Our students need as much clarification as possible!
Patricia Scales
Don't assume the students know what the expectations are. Expain in detail and repeat this throughout the course for clarification
Hi Maureen,
Even adult learners need guidelines to ensure structure.

Hi Rachelle,
Absolutely! We must lead by example. So that our students have a strong professional to emulate.
Patricia Scales
It is essential to create a clear sylabus, course requirements and grading requirements. This will create an excellent guideline for the class.
Hi Dana,
You are right! Our students have a lot going on, and if we do our due diligence as professionals our students can be better prepared to succeed.
Patricia Scales
Hi Chet,
Absolutely! Students will hold your feet to the fire. If you are thorough, then the rest rests on the student.

Some methods that I like to use so that students have a clear understanding of my expectations for the course include handing out a syllabus the first day of class, going over my course expectations, and caring myself as a professional in the class so that they understand that is the same behavior I expect from them.
I go over the course syllabus with the students and give them a chance to ask questions. I also let them know what to expect with each assignment/exam/project and with lab versus lecture. I feel that it is important to be well organized and have all of the assignments, exams and activities planned ahead of time and make sure that the students understand what is expected of them and when, because I have so many students who work and have children. In order to be successful they need this from the instructor.
The syllabus is important to providing the students with the answers to the FAQ's, if you will. The more precise you are in defining what you are asking of them the better off you are when students come and say they didn't know about this or that.
Hi Shirley,
Great ways to ensure clarity of the syllabus. You really go above and beyond to make sure your students fully understand.

Hi Michelle,
It is vitally important to ensure everyone fully understands the course expectations. I like to provide visuals when appropriate to promote clarity.
