Letting students know course requirements and giving examples of activities on day one helps students to know what is expected of them, importance of meeting deadlines etc.

Hi Miriam,
Awesome response! I agree 100%. We must sometimes be hard-nosed with our students because in the real world all those excuses are not going to be tolerated.

Hi Wendy,
I am sure your students appreciate how you put things in simple terms for them to have better clarity as to what is expected of them.

Patricia Scales

Hi Nevine,
Students really appreciate it when examples are shared to help ensure them that they are on the right track.

Patricia Scales

Hi Dale,
Students love it when we talk about how the course applies to their career. We have to show course relevancy to our students so that they understand the importance of the course.

Patricia Scales

I love your lat sentence:
"Deadlines are explained from a job or court perspective in that if you tell your boss or a judge you cannot be there or produce the needed documents, you will not have a job for long.

I think a lot of the time students expect that extensions will be given or excuses taken and in reality we find that in "the real world" this is not usually the case. There are exceptions but we should not set up students to feel that they will be the exception because in a way we are doing them a disservice and shielding them from reality.

I will spend first day of class with brief introductions, and then dive into the syllabus. Give the students the opportunity to ask any questions regarding the syllabus and teacher expectations. Have it written in clear, precise and easy to understand language.

make clear short points in the syllabus and give examples concerning every activity and give them time to ask about any conflict they might have

Hi Daniel,
These are thorough ways to make course requirements clear. I love how you explain things from the perspective of the employer. Students need to know that employers are not going to play with them.

In addition to a review of the syllabus, I relate the course to the program/degree for which the students are enrolled. I do this to explain the link between the skills and knowledge required to both pass this course and to be successful in their chosen career.

I review the syllabus line by line with explanations and questions for the students. I try to ensure that all the students know what the course requirements are, due dates for all assignments and what they can expect from me. This is all covered the first part of the first class session I have with the students. Deadlines are explained from a job or court perspective in that if you tell your boss or a judge you cannot be there or produce the needed documents, you will not have a job for long.

This is importante because will make students feel more comfortable and learn better

I have a clear orientation at the beginning of each course. I have them ask questions.

Hi Tawana,
Super! You will make a fine instructor. Students can quickly tell when you love what you do. Teaching is truly my love. I love jit ust as much or more from when I first started over 23 years ago.

Patricia Scales

Hi Edwin,
Students really appreciate it when the instructor provides step-by-step instructions. Students gain a better understanding when great clarity is provided.

Patricia Scales

Hi Julie,
These are great ways to ensure students know exactly what is expected of them.

Patricia Scales

Hi Adonis,
The syllabus is an excellent way to ensure clarity. I love it when instructors welcome questions.

Using a syllabus is very effective for me. I have a syllabus that is provided but I am also able to suggest changes and modifications that help to maximize my time and empower my students. I go over that syllabus with my students the first day of class.

Thank You, I look forward to my growth,Teaching has always been my passion.

Step by step instructions, with examples of proper work and where to find supporting data. As-well-as lecture and demo notes able to be utilized while the student is working.
