I read the syllabus in class. I post the syllabus in the class forum. I use different font in the syllabus content
I post requirements in the syllabus. I then hand out the syllabus and review the syllabus in class. I then post the syllabus to the student portal and highlight the most important areas of concern for all the students. I ask all students if they understand the syllabus and make sure ever student is clear on the syllabus requirements
Hi Patricia,
I first pass the Syllabus out and go through it with the class highlighting the requirement points....I will also periodically in other classes.....I explain to them to read it thoroughly at home again and come in with any questions....
Hi Leveda,
What great ways to ensure clarity of course requirements. Your students are fortunate to have you as their instructor. You go the extra mile to make sure your students know exactly wht is required of them. I love the motivation saying you put on the board daily!
Patricia Scales
Every meeting, on the board the day's objectives are listed along with a motivation saying. Assignments are also listed. I give the students a calendar that has all assignments listed and due dates. Open communication if a student has a deadline, can be changed or modified but must be known ahead of deadline just like real world. Students understand deadlines and respect them.
Hi Floyd,
Wow what a great job you do to ensure course clarity! Your students should appreciate you going above and beyond for them.

Hi Arthur,
When you are thorough with your overview, students have a better understanding as to what is expected of them.

Making course requirements clear for students
by: Floyd Mitchell Raines
I always give a good orientation when new students begin. Also I post my syllabus and course outlines on my classroom bulletin board. Also I help the students design a goal sheet that they can track their projects and when things are due.
For new students a complete overview of the course requirements is a good way to get the students interested in asking questions. This helps to clarify any misgivings a student may have about the course expectations.
Hi Michael,
A great way to ensure clarity of course requirements. Structure tends to make things run smoother.
Patricia Scales
I used to overlook this, but when I started stating objectives and providing students with a daily agenda, they not only appreciated it, but we got through the course material smoothly.
I engage the students in relative discussion of the information prior to the lesson. I intend to gain an understanding of the student perspectives concerning the information before I strive to inform them in the realm to which I intend them to develop their understanding moving forward!
Hi Jason,
Yes, students need to know on Day 1 exactly what is expected of them. The tone has to be set initially.
Patricia Scales
First thing i do in a new class is cover the syllabus with the students., I will let students know deadlines to submit their work. I also will inform them of the penalties for not meeting the deadline. I then will cover t
Hi Rick,
What an outstanding job you do for your students to ensure course requirements clarity
Patricia Scales
I provide a syllabus the first night of class, along with all Texts. I provide a weekly schedule of what we do on Mon, Tue., Wed., Thur. and Fri.
Every Wed. I hand out a sheet showing what homework is due on the following Mon. Tue. and Wed. Thursday is test day and Fri. is Open Shop day. This gives them the week-end to complete the assignments. (Many of my students work full time day jobs and come to class from 6 PM to 11 PM.
The handouts make it very clear what is expected from week to week.
Hi Brian,
Awesome way to ensure clarity! Students need to fully understand what is required of he/she.
Patricia Scales
I use a detailed syllabus that lists the topics covered in each class, all assignment and the dates that they are due, all projects and the dates that they are due. This is provided and reviewed with the student on the first day of class. This way, if a student is absent for some reason, he or she still can turn work in on time, and there is never an argument that a student was not given enough advance notice to complete a project.
We use Power point to clearly list all course requirements at the beginning of each class. We then go over the requirements one more time at the end of class and verify that all students understand each requirement.
Hi Theresa,
Yes, calendars are lifesavers. Students need to have something to refer to.
