The greatest tool to learning is to be able to relate it to your prior experiences. By offrering various examples of work requirred in course, the student can develope a connection to what needs to be accomplished and how best to acheive success using prior learning tools.
so they know what to expect and thet can begin to identify themselves in the upcoming situation
Showing exapmles of students work will help them to realize how much they really know and understand. If we dont show students waht they are getting wrong they will not understand how to do things in the future and they will constantly be getting them wrong which in the health field could end up costing a life. this would be a very bad thing and not only would the student feel mortified but so would I as having been one of their instructors.
An interesting method which I am truly going to try next class. Look forward to seeing the results.
So the student can see an end result and know what is expected of them. I show my students various samples from former students without names on them. This way they can see what amount of work and what type of work needs to be done in order to earn a grade they strive for.
It helps to set expectations and it can also help makes students more comfortable. By setting this kind of classroom atmosphere, students are more likely to be sucessful.
Hi Jennifer,
As long as you fully understand the "why" of an assignment you are eager to get it done. Examples are a motivator for students.
Patricia
I think it is important to show examples because I feel if you understand why you are doing something then you are more likely to complete whatever set task correctly and efficently.
Hi Angela,
Visual learners love being shown examples and for the most part all learners love to be shown examples. By seeing examples the light bulb comes on.
Patricia
I find it help to give examples or ahow them what is needed. This way they see it and if they are a visual learner then it covers all the bases
Hi Lisa,
Students do gain a great sense of excitement whenever examples are shared. Students develop interest in the project.
Patricia
Hi Amy,
We all think differently. Students can really get great ideas by being shown examples, and they can really use their imagination and creativity and do an outstanding job.
Patricia
By providing examples of other student's work, this sets the expectations of what type of work will be considered acceptable. It would also provide the opportunity for discussion about the projects/assignments and give the students a better understanding of how to incorporate their own thoughts into pre-existing samples of work.
It will hopefully make them feel more comfortable. It will also guage thier understanding of the material or methods of knowledge they have. Showing the work ahead of time also enables the student to plan for any types of materials they may need to acquire i.e., presntation boards, commercial printing, or for purposes of time management to access how much time may need to be allocated for a particular assignment. For instance, I recently showed a class a Power Point example of a required final project we were just beginning, to find out that half of the class did not know how to do a Power Point and their anxiety levels increased so much during my presentation, they totally shut out the content of what I was presenting. They failed to also hear the portion of the directions where I added that this was just one way they could present the project. There were many. Once I explained that again, their fears were resolved.
They can see diffrent ways of thinking. Sometimes the same way they think and sometimes somethings they would never think of!
When you show examples of student work to your new students it does a couple of things. First, it gives them an idea of what they will be doing in the course and what they will be able to do. Second, it also lets them know what you as the teacher are excepting in there work. When I show work I also try to show my students what A work looks like as well as what B or C work looks.
Hi Amanda,
We've done the same thing at my institution, and the grades were extremely high after being shown an example. Students fully understood what was expected of them. Students appreciate being shown examples.
Patricia
Hi Amy,
Students need a point of reference. As educators, we should make it very plain to students what is expected of them...visuals make it a lot clearer to students.
Patricia
Hi Arturo,
Students need to and want to know what it takes to successfully complete the course. Showing examples give students a better understanding as to what is expected of them.
Patricia
It promotes interest in the course. It also shows the student why it is important to successfully complete the course and how it's related to the workplace in their new career.
