It will deal with the expectations of students issue. This way students will know what to expect and how the class will go, even on a daily basis. This will make the class flow smoother and earn more respect from students.
Hi Christopher,
Effective class management is a must!! The environment needs to be conducive for effective learning to take place.

I have found that there are three levels to class management. Finishing required materials. Managing a class as a group of individuals with the same goal, success. Managing the class so that special issue students can be identified and approached.
Hi Sharon,
We should certainly be the role model that we want our students to become.
Patricia Scales
Because it gives all students an opportunity to learn and move ahead in life and achieve their personal and professional goals. It creates an atmosphere of trust and respect and crediability for the teacher if he/she can display leadership and confidence in the classroom, and besides that it is a great role model for students.
Class management is so important because there is often a lot of material to cover in the set amount of time. We have 3.5 hours to cover lecture, recipes, review, and demonstrations. This can be slowed down with Q & A, and helpful examples from field. I find that I will check the clock a couple of times during each segment so that I cover everything and do not go beyond the ending time.
Hi Tammy,
That's right! As adult learners, most of our students are extrememly serious about their education, and they look to the instructor to fully control the classroom so that effective learning can take place.

Hi Kimberly,
Absolutely! As instructors, we must control the classroom and create an environment that is conducive for learning to take place.

Most people who are attending school have good reasons for doing so. Classroom management shows everyone that their reasons are respected and valued. As you are teaching, it is important for career college students to understand that everyone is paying for their education (whether in money or time and effort) and they expect to get the information that is required.
I feel that if the students get out of control, the whole class can spin out of control. By showing that the rules need to be followed or the student will have to leave, the other students can feel comfortable with the learning atmosphere.
I totally agree with you Craig. The rules & "regs" should be explained in the syllabi, said out loud week 1 (my opinion) and I believe any questions about them should be addressed right away. People need to have parameters, they feel safer and more empowered when these are communicated. It's very good to dialogue about the consequences of ignoring these, as well. As a professor, I abhor the feeling that something that impacts my work was not expressed and then if I don't successfully meet it's demands I feel as if I was "hit in the back of the head". I speak about this feeling with students when I address the rules. I tell them I am giving time to a discussion of them because I feel it's fair, it's respectful and it's ethical. Everyone should know what consequences they will invite before breaking a rule or reg and know that they were told from the start. They also need the consequences to fit the broken rule and to be consistent, no matter who they are in the class. Even-handed teaching is rudimentary and important.

I agree with you, Richard. If students did not need focus and rules, they could learn the material at home. And we see how well that normally works out! :-)
Class management for student success is very important to focus and learn. Students needs to be aware of the rules, polices and procedures in order to be successful in and out of the classroom. Learning to follow rules, polices and procedures in school will help students to follow rules in the workplace.
Class management shows professionalism and control, also knowledge and maturity
Hi Kimberly,
Super to share this with students. Most instructors have this information, but they do not share it with the students.
Patricia Scales
Hi Tracy,
You are right on point! It is only fair to the students to make it crystal clear as to what is expected of them.

At the beginning of class, I hand out my daily agenda. It is tailored for each class I teach. It tells my students what we will be going over that night, what is due for homework- and any upcoming events that is important for them. It also helps me keep up with what is due- and when.
Student need to know what is expected of them. They need to know what the basic format of their time will consist of. Without this, there is a lack of direction for their educational experience.

Class management takes an important role in educational planning. We manage the class to ensure we cover the learning outcomes of the course as outlined in the sylabus. If not properly planned, then class will not be managed effectively. Consequentially, some critical concepts or outcomes are left out from the lectures.
I think everyone performs better when they know what is expected of them.
