Hi Bethanne,
It is always good to have something to refer back to. You will love your diary!
Patricia
You can have all the best intentions in your educationl planning for your students, but if you don't have the class management component under control, all of your educational planning is for naught. As I read this portion of ED104, I have come to better understand the importance of how your educational planning can "circle the drain" if you aren't managing your class properly. I plan to start keeping a diary to refer to. I really liked the statement in the end that said,"by keeping a diary and referring to it, you can decrease the number of mistakes which in turn increases your instruction and decreases the time spent problem solving." That's incentive enough for me!
Class management is a critical part of planning because it helps to keep students focused and
serious about expectations.
Hi Marian,
It is only one manager of the classroom, the instructor. Students want you and need you to take full control.
Patricia
Class management is critical because it sets the tone of expectations and also allows the student to understand what type lecture discussions they are able to become involved in.
Hi Charlie,
Nicely stated! We should be one of the main reasons that they are successful!
Patricia
Without a carefully planned schedule, the instructor relies on their ability to sing and dance. I do not know about the rest of you, but I am no Fred Astaire. If I had Ginger Rogers to distract the students maybe I could wing it better, but the reality is that without a plan instructors get themselves into trouble. Students rely on us to be prepared to deliver the information to advance their educational agendas and we should not be the impediment to their success.
A positive learning environment will promote student learning and if left to chance, it may or may not happen. Intentional planning for strategies to manage a particular classroom has a better chance for a positive learning experience outcomes for that individual class.
Hi Kathleen:
That is well stated in my opinion and should differentiate high school from college students, whether in a career college setting or other post-secondary educationl environment.
John
When a class is not managed properly, chaos results. Respect is lost and you lose track of what has been done or needs to be done. The students will be aware of this and simply not listen to what you are trying to teach them.
Totally agree. Couldn't say it any better myself.
Thanks,
WCD
Corey,
You mentioned two important factors in your post: preparation and follow-through. These elements are essential for proper classroom management. We demonstrate our seriousness about the learning experience to students when we are prepared for class and follow-through on assignments/readings.
Hi Instructor Scales,
Class management is a critical part of educational planning because it is one way to keep control of where the class is and where it is heading. It helps us to remain on track and to meet our goals and objectives for completing the class.
Hi Raymond,
Students can quickly pick up when you are unprepared. Being unprepared can cause one to lose all credibility.
Patricia
Keeping everything in order and maintaining class control keeps you looking like the professional that is expected. Running around and trying to set things up at the last minute just gives the students the idea that you are not professional or ready to teach.
The classroom needs to be an enviroment condusive to education. A good teacher is in control of the classroom at all times.
Without classrooom management, it is much harder to communicate your subject matter. You may have less time to present your material if you are spending time dealing with disruptive behavior.
If you can't maintain control of the class, the objectives are lost, the class will control the time for the opportunity to learn. Classroom management is critical to be able to deliver the required course materials within the alotted time for the class.
Most students want to learn and be challenged. Instructors should make sure students are challenged with exciting activities whether they be in group sessions or individually. Students should be kept busy and the instructor should have a way to see if their students have attained what they were trying to teach. There are many assessment tools that instructors can utilize. Instructors should highlight in their books the important points so they definitely cover those points and revisit them at the end of the lectures. Instructors are managers of their classrooms and should have a classroom conducive to learning.
Class Management is critical to a sucessful class. Time management is critical to Adult Learners who have other committments outside of school. if the instructor is prepared, organized, and offers real life answers to the question "what's in it for me" the students will participate and strive to complete the work.
