It doesn't matter how well you have prepared for your lesson, if your class cannot hear, or understand your presentation because of disruptions in the class. Class management depends on the instructor giving clear and concise expectation of student behavior.
Student also want to know in detail what the can expect from the instructor. Spelling out these expectation at the beginning of class can solve many management problems before they start.
Hi Sandra,
Students need and want to be managed. The environment should be one that is conducive for learning to take place.

Hi Anthony,
When you do not have classroom control, most things are out of wack. Nothing seems to be right without good classroom management.
Patricia
Without good classroom control you will spend more time enforcing (or not enforcing) rules and less time getting students the education and training they have made a big investment in. Students will also miss out on opportunities to complete tasks in a timely fashion and you will have less time to monitor their performance and redirect them in ways that allow them to improve their skill set.
Class management provides teh organization and structure to support student learning.
Hi Gail,
You're right! It is the instructor's job to fully manage the classroom. The classroom should be an environment that is conducive to learning.
Patricia
Primarily we need a controlled environment, and as the manager of said environment (classroom) we are in the position to do as much. Our students need to be assured that they are coming to a class that has plans, directions and goals. The handling of this is our responsibility.
Class management keeps the course on track. Never assume the students won't have issues or are 100% on board with everything to have planned. Staying prepared, organized, and dedicated are the key aspects of managing the course. Remember, its a marathon...not a sprint.

Hi Patricia,
How would you evaluate your strictness for these large classes as well as your class management skills?
Patricia
Hi Kelly,
Preparation is key! Students can pick up immediately when the instructor is unprepared. Unpreparedness causes way too many problems.
Patricia
If the instructor isn't prepared, how can the student be properly prepared? Students need to be guided and they need to know that their instructor be able to do so. And if the instructor is not prepared, there is room for control to be shifted to the class, where it does not belong.
I usually have large classes with students who do not attend regularly. It is a very large management problem because we teach a lot of information in a short period. I get a lot of practice at managing students and their excuses, late papers and assignments. I find that I have to have very clear rules/expectations.
Hi Marshall,
Absolutley! As instructors we need to provide immediate feedback with grading to our students. Graded papers should be returned the next class period. Students need the feedback!
Patricia
Class management is critical...not only does it help to make the best and most efficient use of time, it keeps the students feeling secure that they are learning when they meet the due dates and benchmarks.
I agree with you on this but think we need to add that we need to show timeliness on returning assignments and tests. We lose credibility when we push for deadlines but do not set the example by returning materials to our students.
Hi Wendy,
Class managment is vitally important for all learners. Students want the class to be managed in a way so that effective learning can take place.
Patricia
Class management is important for adult students because they need leadership and direction. If you are prepared, organized and dedicated they will respect you. Provide simple support and remember their names.
Class mgmt. is critical because you have a variety of types of personalities and varying types of learning styles. So you must strike the right balance to achieve optimal balance and success.
Class management is the foundation of respect. Without proper management, time, poor conduct, confusion, and a lack of respect for the instructor can all become present. This will not only detract from the professional respect an instructor needs to establish with all students but also make it more difficult for even the very dedicated students to stay focused and succeed.
