Proper class management confides a sense of organization to the class and students. It demonstrates the seriousness of the education process that you are making in the class for the benefit of your students. Without proper management, one runs the risk of constant interruptions, lost education time, addressing negative behavior, etc. I incorporate all students in class management. I have a "Three Muskateer"/ 3 strike policy. All students ae esponsible for their actions and these actions may have consequences on the whole class. If something "negative" occurs in class, thats strike 1. When we reach 3 strikes, points may be deducted from all students. While students may disagree with it at first, they quickly realize that they have some input of the conduct of the class. We are a small "kingdom" and order maust be maintained in order to accomplish the tasks we have.
At the start of the semester you go over the ground rules which sets up the class structure. The students then know what is expected of them and what they can expect from the instructor. Applying the rules with flexibility and forethought is important. Rules enforced by black and white interpretation can be almost as destructive as no rules at all. I all cases use your head and keep it fair to all.
Structure is everything this will control distracted students from disrupting the classroom teachings.
Boundries will help these individuals stay focus or thinks before acting out.
I agree because they need all the above and this will make your life easier in the classroom instead of dreading to teach this class.
I am always in agreement with preparation and it leaves a since of organization and time management with the students on your behalf.
I agree, there has to be structure or they will be everywhere in learning and understanding rules. Keeping it real with them so to speak is the best policy, this allows for not having confusion in the classroom.
This allows you to get everything that is to be complete within that block time done. Every day has to be alloted a time frame and extra time should be counted for any skills class because sometimes things happen that are out of your control.
Avoiding disruptions and delivering the material in an organized and timely manner would definitely help.
Hi Andrew,
It is the instructor's job to produce an environment that is conducive for learning to take place.

It is important to establish a routine so students know what to expect and feel comfortable. Students additionally need to know what is considered acceptable or unacceptable in the classroom. Without proper class management, the class may become "out of control" or unorganized, and it can take away from the learning process.
You have to have control. It's lessens your credibility and any chance of respect. You are in control and students are expecting you to lead. If you lose control students will take over and the students that are there to learn will feel that you are wasting their time and yours too. What will you spend your time doing if you can't manage the classroom?
Class management sets the pace for class learning. Each class I write on the board the objectives for the day and the order in which we are going to do them. I also make sure I follow the syllabus and well as give students study material and power-point information in advance so they may review and come prepared to each class. On day one, I start learning students names and identifying different age groups and their past learning/education experience so that I can structure my teaching to enhance the learning environment.
Hi Cordelia,
I agree! It is the instructor's responsiblity to produce an environment that is conducive for learning to take place.

Without class management the class is a mess. Being able to manage the class helps the instructor to teach the class and take care of other issues that are at hand.
Hi Naoufel,
It is hard for effective learning to take place if the class is not being managed appropriately.

It will establish an set up for :
Discipline
Respect of rules
learning process
students learning monitoring
students outcome
students expectations
Establishing proper "Class Management" from the start can save class time instructor effort and minimize class disruption. Stopping class to advise a student to put thier cell phone away breaks the instructors train of thought and distracks our students which, of course burns up valuable class time. They may be an occasional management issue even with the established ground rules but not an every class day occurance. Bruce
Students want to learn. Consistent classroom management is essential to enable all students to have the opportunity to learn as much as they can. If there is lack of classroom management even for a moment it totally throws the students and the learning environment.
I've always felt that an Instructor must be able to manage her or his classroom at all times.
Students need guidance and leadership.
The students do need structure in order to facilitate learning. The expectations and requirements are valuable in setting up this positive learning environment. I have noticed that it doesn't take long for things to fall apart due to inconsistencies. It also takes longer for things to get back on track.
