A poorly managed classroom short changes students. Allowing chatting , talking and disruptive students free reign interferes with the class's ability to learn. They have paid good money and interupted their lives to improve them and it is unethical not to provide an environment in which they can learn.
A well managed classroom includes instruction that is engaging and fills the time slot, a well otrganized instructor who has taken the time to prepare lesson plans, a comprehensive syllabus, learning activities that embrace different learning styles and the ability to engage students and encourage participation by all members of the group.

Hi William,
All of these things mentioned make effective use of managing the classroom.
Patricia

Hi Anthony,
The instructor has to do a superior job of managing the classroom so that learning can take place.
Patricia

Hi Laura,
Consistency is key when it comes to enforcing rules.
Patricia

Good classroom management is critical to student success. By establishing all the rules and procedures upfront, everyone can operate from the same set of expectations. Having a plan in place provides the instructor a framework to lean on and helps him or her be consistent in applying standards.

Your class is your "department" put together for a period of time (the class term) to achieve some objectives (learning Business Communication, or Principles of Marketing, etc.) It'd better be effectively managed to sucessfully accomplish those goals.

Not only is class management good for the students by having a good learning environment, but it also we have to make sure that all the planning put in, is done in the amount of time for the class. If we manage time incorrectly, we have not taught all the material, personal experances, and training aides available. You must also keep a professional appreance and additute with your class.

Hi John,
What a response! You are definitely on point.
Patricia

By definition, "when teaching adults, class management means that you are prepared, organized, and dedicated to sharing your expertise and knowledge of the field.", some powerful words. It lets everyone know, and makes things so much easier for you students and for yourself, that you are professional. You are there is a skills that your students do not yet have; you are there to teach them the skills. Preparation is key to success.

Hi Holly,
Learining does rock--manage effectively so that students want to keep coming back!
Patricia

Class management is EXTREMELY important - students are nervous enough beginning a new course, or new phase of their lives, so having a clear syllabus with well defined goals, objectives, and learning requirements is necessary to put the student at ease. Effective class management should make the student excited to show up each day - learning rocks!

Hi David,
It is the instructor's sole responsibility to manage the class effectively.
Patricia

Hi William,
The classroom should be conducive for learning.
Patricia

So true, Kathleen! A consistent and well-managed class sets the tone for success.

Class management is important to maintain a positive learning environment. Even with adult learners there will always be 1 or 2 students who have their own idea of what the class should be about, or think it is o.k. to be disruptive. You have to be able to manage these individuals so they learn the needed material themselves, and maintain class control so they aren't disruptive to the rest of the class and the others ability to learn. Its usually a very small percentage that cause problems, but can seem overwhelming if not addressed.

Hi Jerry,
Nicely state! You must let the students know that you are in control.
Patricia

Class management is a must. it needs to start on the first day of class and should start with a greeting. If you let the students know what is to be expected of them and why it is expected the students all can learn. If you let control go none of the students will get what they paid for.

Hi Casey,
You are on point. The classroom environment should be one that is very conducive for learning. The instructor has to fully control the environment.
Patricia

The way in which a class is managed greatly influences the learning that takes place in a classroom. If a class is disorganized, unruly, disrespectful, etc. learning will take place at a very low level (if at all). On the contrary, a well managed, well organized classroom makes it easier for students to be receptive to the content in the learning environment.

Hi Michael,
Absolutely. It is our job to manage the class well. It appears you are an effective class manager.
Patricia
