Having good control of your class makes it easier for all students to be able to learn. If you allow the class to get out of hand it prevents those students who are dedicated from being able to learn the material, and it gives the students who are creating the disturbance the idea that they have your permission.
Because often "issues" arise with group dinamics. Knowing how to dissolve the issues and keeping the learning environment intact allows the instructor to continue with the course of study instead of having a train wreck.
Class management is important for student success because without it the learning environment becomes noisy and chaotic and the students who truly want to learn are not able to because essentially the inmates are running the prison. And because it is chaotic it is difficult for the teacher to convey their lesson and even more difficult for the students to take away the information that they need in order to succeed in their profession. And when you put this all together it leads to unhappy students who want to quit or change programs because they cannot stand the environment in which they are to learn. Students want and need instructors who are consistent and firm so that way it will not feel like some students can do as the please and never be penalized.
It is crucial as instructors we are getting them ready for the workforce where there is no room for error. In other words, if they can act professional in the class then they will succeed at work!
Class management is a primary aspect of an efficient and beneficial learning environment. Creating a structure in which students feel comfortable, where no disruptions will disturb the lecture will help in creating a positive interaction between class, class members and the instructors and also elevate the retention's level of the information among students.
There are a few reasons why this is a significant part of teaching. One, we don't want to waste the time of our students. Many of our adult learners have jobs, families, or both, and they'll likely resent the fact that their instructor is taking longer than needed to communicate course material or exercise activities. Two, certain student behaviors can be distracting (or even destructive), decreasing the productivity of others and compromising the learning environment as a whole. Instructors need to have efficient, respectful ways of ending such behaviors soon after they start.
Hi Merlita,
The classroom should be conducive for learning. We as educators owe it to students to ensure the environment is one where effective learning takes place.
Patricia
It sets the basis for clear, organized, well managed approach for a learning environment
Hi LaTonya,
Absolutely! Students need and want structure. Students appreciate it when you maintain good classroom management.
Patricia
The students will respect you more if you maintain control and professionalism at all times in your classroom and if you appear to be organized and stick to a schedule.
Hi Omar,
It is the instructor's sole responsibility to ensure the environment is a place where effective learning can take place. Students do not control the classroom, the instructor does. We must be effective classroom managers.
Patricia
Hi Richard,
Rules, policies, procedures, etc. are in place for a reason. They are meant to be followed. Chaos would be prevalent, if there were no rules, policies, and procedures. We manage the classroom by having rules, policies, and procedures.
Patricia
The instructor needs to take control and manage the class so that the environment is conducive to learning - otherwise there could be chaos in the class.
Hi Christopher,
Student evaluations should be taken as constructive feedback. Educators can learn a lot from student evaluations to improve their teaching methods, behavior, action, etc.
Patricia
The students (for the most part) need a structured atmosphere to be able to focus and learn. It is very easy to set the right stage by explaining the every positive palce they go in life from here will have policies and guideline that are in place to make that buisness operate smoother.
Class management allows students to achieve the maximum results. I use student evaluations as a way to measure my class management techniques.
Hi Carlos,
You made some great points! Students need and want the class to be managed properly. Effective learning is hard to take place in a chaotic environment.
Patricia
Hi Marsa,
Yes! Students should not have to deal with a chaotic class at all. An uncontrolled class is totally unfair to those students who really and truly want to learn. It is the instructor's responsibility to make sure the class environment is conducive for learning.
Patricia
Student's pay a lot of money to come to school and they feel cheated if the class is in constant chaos. Even the most dedicated students will loose interest if the class is not being managed well. The students will start to loose respect for the instructor and the disruptive student(s).
Classroom management leads to general guidance for all students involved. The students learn a standard that they must live within during the class as well as having a sense of what to expect during class. It also makes for a better learning environment for all levels of learning.
