This is very true it happened to our school and it was awful. It not only harms the institution it also harms the moral of the staff and current students. I had to visit each classroom and give them a confidence booster and remind them of the harm this type of complaint can cause. I also reminded them that my door was always open to address issues. In just a couple of days other students replied in support and the bad comments were removed.
Since our Institution is very traditional the social media is limited to Web Page and a little facebook. Since the information posted in this massive media channels is so important we are trying to keep it simple with the compliance information only. However, we are trying to design a strategy for the immediate future on how to manage internally since right now the Institution does not have any position assigned for this duties. How does other Universities handled the social media, with new positions assigned specifically to this tasks??
Our institution has a Facebook page and an intranet that connects to our College web site. The Facebook page is run by the Public Relations department. I can see how there is the potential for rule violations to occur very easily when using social media.
At our school, social media is used (but not to a great extent). We are able, however, to show off some interesting guest speakers that come to the College on the social media site, which I believe is a benefit to the College; allowing us to remain relevant in the modern age of technology.
We have great success. We post pictures of training in action and pictures of Grads with their diplomas. Also a great way for Alumni to keep in touch and share their successes. We also post little "Tid Bits" on FB and "did you know" facts about the industry just to keep followers interested and engaged.
Also could be a harmful tool if some unhappy students have access to that social page and can spread an incorrect information about your Institution.
Social media is a great tool that can generate a lot more positive attention to the school and campus if it is used properly. Unfortunately, I've seen some other school's social media pages that are not monitored regularly and students overload the page with negative remarks and complaints, rather than adding to the usefulness of the page. Therefore, it may be time-consuming but it could turn into a very valuable resource if it is properly maintained.
Prospective students, parents, current students, alumni have one common area in which they are all present in one way or another : Facebook. Is a great resourse, however , if we dont know how to take advantage of it , it can be useless.
Our School has Facebook. We post updates, pictures of graduating classes.
The school I work for uses facebook as well to talk about upcoming events as well. I think it is a great tool.
rosa,
This seems to be the way of initial contact these days. Everyone seems to be checking for new updates and new friends.

Ramon,
It can be very fun as well. Putting information on the web is a great way to communicate and connect.

John,
Excellent! That's a great way to stay in contact and have new people introduced to your school.

Niurka,
Yes, social media does have a Darkside. When negative comments do arise on the Internet it's very difficult to overcome them.

My institution uses social media to provide information about the school, events, and different resources available. This increases interaction and students are able to ask questions that they might have.
Social media is great for school spirit and for letting everyone know the good work the institution is doing
Our school has an institutional Facebook page. We ask our students to like the page and share it with their friends.
In my school, social media is used mostly to promote certain offers, scholarships and even events such as workshops and/or fundraisers. In my opinion, it could make the school easily by expanding the name and it could also break the school even easier if we receive a lot of negative complaints/references.
Nicolette,
It is! It's a great way to advertise what's going on at your school and create a sense of community.

Nick,
It's interesting that we can reach students through social media when we could not reach them by phone. It shows where their focus and immediacy tends to.
