Classroom management in a Bilingual classroom setting

Hello Everyone: I am a faculty director and we facilitate classes in a bilingual setting with multicultural environment. Therefore when I facilitate the class I have to be a guide as well as a bit of controller. This is caused by the cultural diversity that we have here at our campus. Nevertheless, maintaining the class of approximately 25 adult students engaged is not as easy as some may think. We have to juggle between two languages and at the same time maintain the students active so that those that are not as fluent in the English language may at times define the flow of the class. So therefore, we have to be a combination of controller and guide. leaning heavily towards guide. Interesting enough , we can do it. Chalie Colon,

Dealing With Challenging Students

I have found that if you have difficulty getting some students to join the class, I have them write things on the white board that I usually write or draw. It changes their behavior and they feel important and part of the class.

Course Buy In

I always try and relate the course content to all of the careers of the students in my class so they feel included and see how matter applies to their pursuit.

Late Work / Online Classes

I have online classes and I get late assignments every term. I always have a few students who do not turn in enough work and do not pass. I would like some advice on how to handle this situation. I constantly call, email, and even text students now to get their assignments turned in. This is an ongoing issue for me and I wish I could get the majority of it solved. I post due dates on our online class calendar. I always post in bright colors, bold, different font. Nothing seems to work. In our online live lectures, I also remind students about our due dates. With all my pushing and interactions, I still get a few each week who are late or do not turn in anything at all. Does anyone have any other ideas I can try. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Reyna

Discussion / Interaction in small classes

What are some tips in getting a small class to interact and discuss design topics? I have found that the dynamics of the classroom changes and I have had classes were the students do not want to discuss topics or interact with each other. This seems to be a problem when there are not enough students in the classroom.

stresses at home verses stress at work

I feel I don't have enough support at home to sustain the stress at work at times. I am attempting new strategies to aid in this matter. wish me luck

learning from students

You can learn what techniques work best within a classroom from the feedback and attitudes of your students. Students can help you understand if you are fully relating to them by their body language and their overall feel of your delivery. Sometimes you can look at them and they may have a smile on their face while you are talking or they may be leaning in to fully listen. This is when you know you are making a connection and that is a good day of class instruction.

it is better to respected than like

i loved this statement. and well mention about as instructor how to handle class to get respect from students

Being Friendly

This is my first term as an instructor. Some feedback I got is that the students think I am too nice. Some even say I have favorites. This is not the case, however, I do find it easier to call on students who are known for participating and I think that creates a perception. I am always working on this.

Instructor Mistakes

One of the hardest mistakes for me as a new instructor not to make, is to remain at an instructor level and not become too close to my students. I have always wanted people to like me, I am a pleaser.Students are not always happy with me, thats the way it is.

Monitoring

It is important to move about the room, as I have learned. Students have too many distractions (cell phones, computers) It is important to make your presence known so students will remain involved and motivated to stay on task. This is also a great way to provide one on one time when needed as well as point out positive things going on in the room
