time management

Time management is important so you don't leave unfinished business with your class or admin!!

Giving a test in a full classroom

I have found that having numerous versions of tests takes care of this problem. It is more work for us as Instructor's, but it is more beneficial to the student's and much easier to clarify and have concrete evidence if a student is actually cheating.

Technology being a downfall in a classroom setting

In my classroom, every student has a laptop. Now a days, they also have smart phones which have internet access. During my lectures, and anytime I am speaking I have them all close their laptops and leave their phones in their bookbags. Walking through the school one day I peaked through the window of another intructors room and saw that he was lecturing and all of the laptops were open to Facebook, Yahoo, whatever. During lunch, I took him to the side to tell him this, and he was surprised to hear about it. He made a point to have all of them close them from then on and noticed an improvement in grades. : )

Motivating students in the morning that work the night shift.

Starting my class at 8 a.m. makes it difficult to sometimes get the students involved and motivated to start learning. One thing I like to do is to get them laughing a bit. I find that this helps wake them up a bit and tends to get them focused on what I will say next. I do not embarass them by any means, but I like to get everyone involved in some way or some how.

MULTITASKING

Having many responsibilities from different jobs at once makes me multitask in order to be effective in every one. Sometimes I count on that to save time and meet dead lines and when I can't multitask I feel the stress and I can't get to chose what to leave undone, everything seems important.

Working With Adults and What I Have Learned

This was really a great class. I have been working with adults students for 10 years. This class is an excellent refresher on working with adults. Here are some of the ideas I have gleaned here: 1) Adults need to know why they are learning something: This means that they need to know the value of learning the idea or concept 2) Adults need to be self-directed. When it comes to education, they need to feel that they have control over their educational outcomes. Often they are making a choice to go back to school and therefore they want some control over what they learn and why. 3) Adults have their own experiences to bring to the classroom. These experiences need to be valued by the instructor. At times adults come in with formed expectations and perceptions. These need to be taken into account as the classroom dialogue ensues. 4) Adults need to be brought to a place where they feel their education is paying off now. This is achieved when the goals are more present-focused than future focused. It is important for instructors to connect a goal in the classroom with a skill that can be immediately translated into the real world. 5) Ultimately adults are motivated by their own internal drives. The way knowledge is presented to an adult needs to meet with their inner drive to succeed and feel that they are that they are growing as an autonomous, competed and relational human being.

not everyone is perfect

instructor or psychologist how do you get mentally challenged students with attention disorder to buy in..

To do list

I think learning the do's and dont's of a to do list will really help me reduce stress. I actually encouraged a co worker to do this when he seemed overwhelmed with tasks. I also believe this helps you not worry about things when you write them down.

buddhism

If you know a little bit about buddhism you can associate most of the most trendy techniques of stress reduction to it.

Stress

Keep your head in position and dont let people dominated your emotinal stability

Stress

Time stress me out, i want to do 1000 things a day, thats imposible because you are going ending doing everything bad, so do what has priorety

Stress

Some times can make say things you shouldnt said, i have learned you have management your filters in your mind and sometimes let it go...

Setting the stage

I always try to set the stage for my students. When the students see what the class really is going to contain and how they will learn, it usually will keep them interactive.

Working out of a briefcase can be quiet the challenge...

Since I work only part time as an educator at our campus it makes more sense to take my work with me rather than making a space at the shared office. However, this has been quiet a challenge when at home my items have been taken from my car without my realizing it. Also, hard to stay organized with the packing back and forth. I do a cleanup at least once a month and give student papers back as soon as I can. This seems to help.

Styles of Classroom Management

I just finished with this module and found it not only to be very informative, but kind of "fun". I was able to see myself, as well as, other educators I work with in the lesson. It was interesting to me! What does anyone else think? Any management styles other than the four presented here?

Listening and Observing

Learning and Observing is important in the classroom. Listening can difinetly help a student if they are angry.

Focusing in the classroom

Students being focus throughour the classroom can be tuff. In my classroom I try to keep the students busy. I have a lesson plan for each class so we can stay on track.

Different types of learning style for students.

There are many different learning styles that can be used in a classroom. It is important to pay attention to all the different learning styles. 77% of students in the classroom are Visual learners.

Friendly, but not Friends

This is a topic we talk a lot about at our college. Teaching adults it is easy to slip into "friend" mode. This is a big mistake. Students need to see you as a professional. Not above the class as on a pedistal, but as the professional instructor they are paying to learn from. You can and should be "friendly" but not "friends." Can you think of a time that you, or another instructor fell into this trap? How did it end?

Successfully Monitoring Students

I think this is a very valuable skill for instructors to cultivate. Deploying this skill effectively requires getting to class early and being prepared before students arrive. Being prepared allows you to greet students and assess their body language and reactions. Soon into a class you can pick up on changes. From the way "Suzie" comes into the class you can sometimes know whether she will need some extra attention, or perhaps to be let alone for a while. The key is getting to know your students. What example can you share of how successfully monitoring students has helped you in one of your classes?
