Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Make or Break

I've found (and this module reinforces) that the first day - getting acquainted, ice breakers, syllabus & expectation discussions - can really mean the difference between a rewarding experience and drudgery - both for my AND the class!

Adult behavior in class

How do you find the balance between treating the student as an adult and trying to discipline them on bad behavior.

Teacher anxiety

The best advice for minimizing teacher anxiety is to be as prepared as possible. Having all your material ready and having practiced the lesson will help minimize the anxiety. Students sense fear and will take advantage whenever they can.

Stopping the Cheating

During the moduel, it was mentioned for an instructor to stay in one area of the room during an exam. I do not agree with this idea. Cheating happens when students know you are not paying attention. The best strategy is to make a round then stay in one area then make another round. Students see this as you paying attention while not disturbing them or making them feel nervous.

Motivation

No one likes being told what to do. If you encounter a challenging student, telling them how to behave will never work. The goal is to create an environment where the student realizes they are part of the group not the leader and not the follower...just an important member who doesn't need to prove a point.

Setting the standard

Teachers need to lead by example. Students watch every move you make. If you are late getting to class they will also be late. If you take too long to grade and return work, they will not turn work in on time. Have the same expectations for yourself as you would for them.

Boundries in teaching.

It is imperative as an instructor to set professional boundries. Students want us to be their friends but we are not we are their teacher. I listen to my students problems and sometimes offer advice and give them information about student services that are available for counseling, but I never step over the line.

Exercising and Relaxation

I am a phchology/criminal justice major, i use exercise as a technique to relieve my stress from school. When I get to work, I am prepared to deal with the stress of my students and my job with open heart, mind and soul.

Me and Stress

I use to live with stress until I got sick for it. Now I have learned that nothing in this world is worth getting angry at or even upset for that matter. When something bothers me now I just tell people what it is. Let them handel the stress. Often my husband and supervisor will get angry at me because I'm not angry, but when I say things I say it with no emotions. That's because stress already had me down one time and I'm not going back

ORGANIZING SKILLS

Keeping yourself organized in your personal life will help you to be more organize as an instructor. Coming up with different ideas about testing will help you to save time on your classroom activities so you will have more time for lectures and activities.

personality of Instructor

Wow!! This course is insightful. The different style of instructors brings different values into their classroom. We should all strive to incorporate the qualities of a guiding instructor.

TIME RESERVED

Taking control of our time lets us enjoy time doing other things we will not have time for if we putting off for tomorrow what we are suppose to be doing today

Insructors that have (SMEs) and (IDEs)

Instructors that have the subject matter experts and instructional delivery experts are better instructors

Stress Related Impact to Work

At what point do you remove stressors to keep the workplace going?

Managing student behavior

Managing student behavior is challenging every semester. First, to set the boundries between instructor and student. What is appropriate professional behavior whether it be communicated verbally, nonverbally, or in written format. When the boundries and rules are set on day number one with specific consequences then managing behavior is a small event.

Instructor Anxiety

Reviewing notes mentally on the way to class or during travel time has been very helpful for me.

Cheating Students

Standing in the back of the classroom has help avoid cheating from students.

Challenging Students

Mutual respect is essential in working with students.

Engaging students

During the first week of classes, I try to have the students feel excited about the class and its content.

Adult learner

With the adult learner, I find it difficult to balance pushing too hard and not enough, I find it a challenge to motivate uninterested, especially the one who is smart enough to still do well with their grades.
