Put distinct expectations in the syllabus about the improper use of cell pone/iPad/pda.....etc. and be explicit about the demerits or increasing discipline levels and the negative influence on their class grade.

New Instructor Advise

As a new instructor I was so overwhelmed. It seemed like everything was coming at me so fast. Though I know the material I was about to start teaching I felt the hardest part was preparation for classes. Thankfully, the previous instructor left all the previous material (PowerPoint, handouts, test, etc) that I used as an outline. I did not try to "reinvent the wheel" and it was of tremendous help. I cant even imagine how much more overwhelmed I would have been if I had to start from scratch. My advise to all new instructors, at least for the first couple of terms, use the same outline as what was used before. In time, you will know what works and what doesn't, and slowly but surely you will eventually modify the course to one that fits you.

Facebook 'Friends'

My fellow instructors use facebook to communicate with their classes, but I don't. I don't like seeing them and their pictures in that environment. Am I wrong and behind the times on this matter, or should I just sign up and start using this venue to communicate and monitor my students?

Seating Arragements

Our classroom is small and we have a lot of students. Since they have to sit closely together, I think that it would be easy to cheat. What is the best way to arrange the seats for exams?

Reflecting After Class

As I went through the first part of this class, one of the things that stuck out to me was the discussion on reflecting after class. One person said he made notes immediately after on what worked and what didn't, and then adjusted for the next class and did the same thing again. Another said to take 20 minutes after the class and ask yourself questions: What worked? What didn't? What was asked that I wasn't prepared for? What didn't get asked that I was sure would? I think those questions can provide a lot of really good insight, especially for first time teachers. Does anyone else have any questions or suggestions/techniques they may use after a class to reflect and build upon?

Motivation

What are the best ways to keep students motivated? I find that when students are bored with the subject being taught they are less likely to stay motivated.

How to

Dealing with stress is very easy . avoid - hack away at it - meditate. Repeat

More time to

Meditate on how much time you really need to develop new or old materials

Time management

I believe in time management to the point of not knowing no return. It is an important factor in our day to day life.

My stress

I have a lot of stress in my life because of the multiple hats that I wear. I am a small business owner and have property an business interests in 3 states. This means that I travel quite a bit and it seems like there is something always on my plate from various projects. I teach for 4 schools, which used to coordinate pretty well. For instance, there were a few times a year where their break coincided, which was a great time to regroup and distress. However, in the past couple of years, their schedules have gotten off synch such that it is probably only Christmas Day that someone isn't expecting something from me. One way I am finding to relax a bit is to spend as much time near the ocean as I can. Water is a stress buster for me!

Avoid Essay Questions & Manually Graded Test & Exams

When you avoid giving essay, and manually graded test, it will automatically free up a great deal of your time, as well as relieve some of the stress that you are experiencing. Try it!! and I am certain that you will love it!! I do.

Taking Control of Your Time

I am a firm believer that time management is the greatest stress reliever. While I am a procrastinator about many things, I will always meet or exceed the deadline regardless to whether it's work, school, family, or personal. I enjoy working out in the gym and doing other fun activities; therefore, I always complete all necessary task, in addition to always leaving time for myself. "Me Time" is a great, and the best stress reliever for me.

The know it all student

This student will always try to answer every question even if the instructor clearly indicated who was to answer it. Sometimes this persists in spite of instructors intervention. Many times the student has to be told to wait for her turn. Alternatively the approach would be "this question is for so and so" before the question is actually given out. The know it all student plays it cool when hard questions are directed to them.

The Adult Learner

Setting classroom norms at the very beginning of a class is one of the best methods of classroom management. Hang a flip chart or poster, or dedicate a section of white board if you have the space, and list expected classroom behaviors.

ED104

Managing a class. Day 1. I present myself to my students as a person that can heip them succeed in this couse and in life. I talk to them not "AT" them. This day I also go over attendance policies and what it means if they call in sick or don't show up for class...

Instuctor traits

All instuctors handle situations based on their own experiences, education etc.. We must be aware no one can be 100% every day. I have found that facilitating and expecting mutual respect and streesing thaton the very forst class is crucial.
