Time is something we never have extra.
That is why I use 2/2...

When you are set to perform a lab and you find out the night class has used all of your resources, you learn to dance real fast.
I always have a backup plan. Extra labs that can be done at any time

I am the Education Supervisor. Hands On demos work on all levels

I have the same issue.
I by choice put in extra time to be ready.
My night instructor show up 15 mins before class with no PREP time...
Labs are not ready and it shows.
Students GPA also shows

It is important to have everything set. I am Chef instructor and my students are more interesting in demo and practice but before I have to explain them the process, like lecture, power point (very important)for the best understanding for practicing.

Hi Roy:
Good way to double check all things are in order. The biggest problem I've run into with my faculty is waiting till the last minute, assuming everything they need or depend on will be available. When the run into delays, it impairs the flow of class, and students notice the teacher was not prepared. Experience helps, but also, discipline and order can contribute to preparation more as much as time management.

When you are organizied you are in the right state of mind. Students can tell when a instructor is ready for class.

I have a night instructor that does not prep. His performance shows

You have to be ready for class. I used 2/2 system... 2 weeks ahead reviewing notes, updates, websites and making a list of items I need for class. Such as supplies... 2 days before class I make sure I have everything that is needed. Has worked for me

Hi Theresa:
Organized does suggest a kind of orderly way of thinking, which complements planning and preparation. Certainly, teachers who are prepared for their classes will begin with the confidence knowing they are ready to begin.

Regards, Barry

Being oganized is not just beneficial for the students, but for the instructor. If you are organized you have prepared your class material you will be more confident with the content and delivery of the lecture material.

Hi Katherine:
Sounds like you've got some time challenges there. Sometimes, we just have to work with what we have. If your institution allowed for this, perhaps you could have an activity assigned to students that occurs at the last 10-15 minutes of the first class. This might give you an opprtunity slip out briefy and take care of an errand. You might consider a student led discussion by one or more of your better students you trust to keep things in order in your absence.

We have a new program which only allows us to have 10 minutes between classes and I feel that my students are suffering. At the time class is suppose to start everyone starts getting fidgety and getting restless. I usually have everything ready for the class but, I still have to move all of my books to another classroom and get the attendance roster out for the new class.
The students like to have your full attention and if you have to go make copies or gather equipment they do not feel that they have their time spent wisely.

Hi Victoria:
Great! When we're prepared and organized, we send a message to our students we are ready to bring you up to a new level. Doing this with excitement and enthusiasm sets the tone for the class.

Regards, Barry

It sets a good example for the students, it helps makes the most efficient use of class time, and it helps create mutual respect between the students and the instructor.

Hi Michael:
Although many students could not recognize what a professional does and how they act, still, you're right, we can be models of professionalism that may even help show by example how adequate preparation, manner and demeanor, organization, and readiness provide a day by day of professionalism in motion!

Regards, Barry

Hi Kevin:
The first day is important, as is the last. I think better teachers adopt a way of being prepared all the time. The first day experience doesn't have to be any different from any other day. In fact, that's a great time to demonstrate expectations for daily class attendance for the duration of the class.

Regards, Barry

it shows professionalism by being prepared

Being organized and prepared for class gives the student an immediate image of the instructor. When the first day is well prepared and organized it sets the tone for the remainder of the course. If this is not accomplished the instructor will spend the remainder of the course trying to earn the students respect.

Hi Debra:
Students know when a teacher is ready for class. We can compliment that by having and orderly and clean environment, and expect the same from the students. A golden opportunity to be a good role model and emphasize what makes for better settings for learning.

Regards, Barry

Hi Greg:
Yes, we have one chance to make a good first impression. Of course, every class should have the same expectations for orderly, prepared lessons accompanied by all needed resources, in an environment where students feel their teacher sincerly cares about their learning and success. It really takes effort to make a so-so class into a memorable one.

Hi Enrique:
Good comment. In other profession (theater, orchestra, sports), how could any success occur withhout practice or rehearsal. So, I think there's a point to be made about doing some preparation of delivery style and content for selected presentations.
