To encourage them through knowledge and personal experiences to succeed and grow beyond the instructor
My goal is to give students the ability to find and answer their own questions by the end of the course.
I allways tell my students that the information we go over cannot all be memorized, however you should allways be able to find the answer using reference material we disscussed in class.
Hi Anne:
Also, if our students can more fully articulate the concepts we've been describing in our classes, that might be one indicator that we have met our primary goal.

Hi Jay:
In addition, we can also say that we have potentially come closer to meeting the main goal if our students are able to articulate more fully the concepts we've discussed in class.

Ruth, isnt that the best part? As a welding instructor, that is the rewarding part of my job...I love to see a student that is fighting frustration with hard work and practice finally catch on!
I agree as well however, even though we can share our mistakes, to err is human and we have to expect that our students will also make mistakes, and hope tht they learn from them and become stronger in those areas.
preparing them for the furture both economically and personally
Hi David:
I really like the way you describe this goal. Another way might also include imparting the ability to articulate about the topics you've taught in a passable manner.

Hi Jill:
One thing to consider about this very broad topic is that if a student can articulate about the subject matter in a stronger way as compared to when they began the course, this may indicate we have met our primary objective.

Hi Charlasetta:
You are so correct about the difficulty of keeping a group of students continually engaged. One thing that helps is using a variety of teaching methods to address every type of learning style.

To give students a knowledge base and a skill set that they can apply to similiar situations in various ways.
To put into the field a better "product", one that has the education and skills to stand out.
I also believe that i can teach with the mistakes that i have made from the past but the basic foundation of theory needs to be implanted.
too get them to achieve the highest potential in their life, also too fill like they are responsible for helping someone get healthier..
Wow...lots of great input in this forum! After reading much of the comments, there is lots of good information being passed back and forth. Thank you.
As for me, a goal that I strive to get across to my students, is that the topic (anatomy and physiology) is not only necessary for the career path that they've chosen, but that it is also helpful in their personal life and how it can affect family to know what they will learn in my class. I always pray that this, along with the passion I have for this topic, will amplify their "want" to continue to learn more after they are finished with this class. Too strive to be more! And as the instructor, it is my responsibility to establish very high standards within the walls of my classroom. When they enter into these walls, the same high standards are theirs and my room is better known as the "no can't ranch". "I can't" is unacceptable within my walls, and they do begin to see that their standards have never been allowed to be "upped" until now. One of my favorite components to teaching for me so far, is to have several students per term tell me that they are more interested in anatomy after the class than they were before they started!
Personally, learning is a lifeline for me...I don't think I could, or want, to stop learning!!
I agree, having the next generation learn and apply all the knowledge that we can communicate to them. I strive to give my students a sense of accomplishment and pride in themselves as well as their chosen field.
I believe the goal of educating students is to prepare them for the work place in their choosen field.
As training will be a part of any professional future, it is paramount that students acquire the study/learning that will lead to their professional success.
One word would state this - SUCCESS!
For me, the goal should be to help each student to individually meet their maximum potential in the topic, to understand it and be able to utilized the teaching points in the lesson in their profession and/or personally.
