To ensure you are teaching them what they need to know.

Hi Emma:
I think you've presented a good concept that align with my thoughts about it too. We need to be able to give a good foundation of knowledge, assure the stuednts have received it, and the purpose is to be applied in some career related application.

Hi Eric.
True statement. But there are a lot of ways to help. Specific to this discussion post, what is goal of educating students?

To me, it's the transfer of expert knowledge from teacher to student that results in an application related to a specific career field. That's really the bottom line. Many ways to go about it, some more creative than others. But if my definition did not occur, how could we say we educated the students? In my mind, it comes down to "teaching" vs "learning".

Hi Timothy:
Sounds very reasonable. These students are the future. Where else are they going to gain the benefits of the valuable experience possessed by the many talented chefs in training programs and work settings? In school, we have an obligation and opportunity to share all we can, for a better future.

The goal of educating students to me is equipping them with the skills to successfully survive and thrive in the work force. I want to give them the strong foundation they need to learn and grow as they practice their profession. I spend a lot of time on the hows and whys so they have that information later on to empower them when they need it the most.

The goal to educating students is to prepare them for the "real world" as well as to help improve their skills overall and help take them as far as they can go in their career.

I think the students of today are our future.
My goal would be to educate them in the culinary field with knowledge of a strong foundation on which they can build new trends and concepts.
All goals should start with a strong basic foundation.

Hi Robert:
Probably most of our students are involved with vocational-type training. So, life long learning might be a challenge. Knowing how to stay current, where to get information, continuing education, and following changing trends would seem to be part of that mission to teach life long learning.

To me, our goal is to give them all we can about the profession or work setting and assure they get the proper skill training to assist them securing a satisfying job.

Hi Jo:
Great way of summarizing what I think is the essence of our purpose as educators to our students.

Hi Tom:
Yeah, it's kind of a balance. Some students are very skill oriented, but theory weak. Then, there's the opposite extreme, book-smart but all thumbs. A great outcome would be competency and proficiency in both domains.

The goal to educating students I believe is to not only give them a foundation of skills to succeed in their chosen field of study but to also have utilized cognitive skills to solve real world problems.

To prepare them for their future and a life-long learning mindset.

My goal when educating students is to help them to acquire skills they can expand on when they get to their desired career.

Hi Sandra:
Good sentiments. Really, our task is to give what we have to students for the purpose of applying their learned skills in a work setting. Secondarily, it might also include laying the foundation for additional study.

How we go about this important task is varied and multidisciplinary, with mutltitudes of techniques, media, resourses, and delivery options. But transfering what we have to the student, to me, that is the bottom line goal.

The goal of educating students is the reason why I became an educator, to give them the self confidence they need to take their education and career to the next level. To give them something to fall back on and feel proud they accomplished something.

Terri:
Good way of thinking about it. I think, simply stated, the goal is to transfer our expert knowledge to the student and teach it in a way that allows a realistic application to the work setting. Stated earlier, we've seen the "A" student who can't do the job. So did we achieve the goal in that case?

Regards, Barry

Bruno:
Skills and knowledge - sure, that's what we hope will occur. But achieving that is the goal. We have to be able to transfer our expert knowkedge to the student, and then teach how this knowledge can be applied to the work setting. It's like the "A" student who is all thumbs. We really haven't succeded if a student can't perform the duties (or get a job as the result).

Regards, Barry

Hi Eric:
I think valuing their education is a very personal thing. Maybe we can teach that, I'm not sure. However I do believe we can provide the knowledge they need and it's application to the work or profession they've chosen to study.

Regards, Barry

my goal for educating my students if giving them the basis and knowledge to the best of my and there ability to used once out in the filed. To give them the confindence and the assurance that they have the knowledge to get their career started. Each student is an individual and my focus is to challenge them and be able to chanllenge and push them to be better than they thought they ever were.

Ron:
Yes, I've said that myself. I now add transfer of knowledge with a purpose to achieve success in the workplace. I have students who can pass every test, but are unable to hold down or secure employment. I gace them the knowledge but they also needed to be able to apply the skills they learned.
