Kerry,
Good thoughts. For me, I like to be able to also convey an ability to think critically, as this will assist not only in the workplace but in the students personal life as well. Yes, skills, knowledge, and attitude are also expected outcomes.

My goal in educating students is to present a learning situation of cognitive knowledge and physical activity that increases the interest, acceptance, and grasp of my specific area in dentistry.

Christina-Rose,
Yes, soft skill are often the thing that keeps someone employed, or gets them fired, even if they are doing the technical part of their job adequately.

The goal of educating students is providing them with the tools, knowledge and confidence they need to be successful in their career. The soft skills are amoung the most important of those tools.

Vincent,
Good goals. I think if we can deliver the knowledge needed, and provide critical thinking skills, we will have prepared them for both their work career, and their future life experiences as well.

Barry Westling

The goal of educating students, is to make sure they are ready. We need to give them a basic mind set of where they are going and what will be expected from them. With giving them information, skills and keeping them up to date on current expectations.

Peter,
Great. I think if we can provide the knowledge, skills, and attitudes, along with critical thinking skills, we will have prepared our students well (both in the workplace and in life).

Barry Westling

To prepare students to be able to go into the workforce and have the confidence and skills necessary to succeed.

Michelle,
I like that... "and change their life!" We can do that by being thorough, caring, patient, listening, along with our competence and onfidence as a expert in our profession.

Barry Westling

I feel the goal is to give the students the tools they need to succeed. Not just knowledge. Also to possbility change their life.

Michelle,
Good thoughts. To me, there are two levels. One is to provide the students with the knowledge, skill, and attitudes that will lead to effectiveness in the workplace. The second is to convey the importance of critical thinking skills, as this will assist both at work, and in the students personal life. Lifelong learning and solving situations beyond what we could ever teach in a class are worthwile goals to work towards.

Barry Westling

I think the goals of educating students is to broaden their previous knowledge, introduce new knowledge/material and show them how this may affect their lives. Its important to introduce new points-of-view in order to expand their own views and give them reasons why they believe what they believe.

Leslie,
I agree if we can stimulate a desire for lifelong learning, and provide instruction that includes mastery of critical thinking, we'll have accomplished a platform for success in their lives - personal and professional.

Barry Westling

The goal of educating students is to allow them to become experts in their chosen field. Their education should provide them with the abilities to think and solve problems not only in the classroom but also, in any situation that they encounter outside of the classroom. Education allows students to build on past experiences and integrate new knowledge with the information that they have previously learned. Education should always encourage the student to ask questions.

Katherine,
Knowledge without application is less than helpful. Getting students to think critically so that they can apply their skills in the clinical setting and workplace is a great challenge and mission.

Barry Westling

The goal of educating students is to teach them the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in their career field. As an educator for an ADN nursing program not only is psychomotor skills necessary but cognitive skills. Teaching theory and putting it into action is a great experience.

Tim,
You're right, critical thinking is a wonderful skill to pass on to students. This will help them in and outside of work, potentially for the rest of their lives.

Barry Westling

The goal of educating students is not just to train them to execute their skills at a professional level, but to learn how to be independent problem-solvers for their chosen profession. They need to learn how to learn so that by the time they are working professionals, they will be equipped to not just execute what is expected of them, but to push their discipline beyond its traditional limits.

Richard,
I summarize this way: Knowledge, skills, and attitude. If we can get students to be critical thinkers, that's even better, as this will help them both in and outside of work, and in their lives.

Barry Westling

Of course we like to have students prepared to use course material in their professional pursuits, but also tools that will help them get along well with others that they will be coming into contact with in their occupation such respect for others , working well in groups ,punctuality etc.
