I do the same thing with the "view identification" part my blueprint reading class. I also have different students come up and identify the "top," "front," and "right side" views of the prints. When I first began to do this I was almost amazed at how much better the students did on that element of our weekly test.

Different types of students have different learning styles. In regards to visual learners, instructors need to employ strategies that will help visual learners learn. This may include using lots of graphs and pictorial descriptions so the students can see what the data is indicating instead of just presenting the students with a data table. The instructor can also add a hands-on aspect to the visual learning by presenting the students with a data table and ask the student to create a graph to show the data presented. This will no only make the students think about the information given, but also make them transform the information given into something that they will better understand visually.

Visual learners prefer colors, movement and illustrations. Affording white board opportunites or leveaging technology to illustrate content is a preferred strategies I use in the classroom for visual learners.

I love using visual aids because the students seem to come alive with pictures etc. When I am going into a lecture about anatomy, I use a cartoon of Betty Boop which shows her bones and when I start lecture about the muscles of the body I have a picture of John Cena (shirtless) and others including muscled women for the guys in my class! It's a fun way to start.

Hi Hannah, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, when students can apply what they are learning and see the relevance, they are more engaged and retention is much better. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I use models of skulls, teeth, nerves, root morphology etc...I also use Power points, Illustrations in which the students can color or label (and show them creative examples ) I also have them pour up plaster models of teeth and label and color, Sometimes you tube or films are helpful, also drawing is incredibly helpful, as well as using pictures on their flashcards(vocabulary)...I have learned that each class brings it's own culture and sometimes utilizing all of the methods described above helps and other times one or two of the above methods help... It just truly depends on what material we are covering. I also think it is important to make information associative...this is also extremely helpful for our visual learners.
