I pretty much use power point for most of my classes because its the easiest teaching method for me to convey what I want the students to learn. But I also break it up with other methods.

One strategy would be to use a movie that would convey various scenarios throughout. I remember in one class I took many years ago, Military leadership, the instructor used the movie: 12 O'Clock High. At various point throughout the movie, we would discuss the type of leadership that should or should not be used. Watching the movie actually helped many of us, since we found that we learned better by watching or seeing something.

Many of my students are visual learners I remember many of my students were failing their anatomy and Physiology class my job is to find the trend and see how we can improve our curriculum. I realized it was the book that’s filled with text but not too many pictures. When we decided to change the curriculum and book and invested on Electronic materials for the courses, i saw a huge increase with test scores.

I teach hvac/r. I found using colors helps them learn the different states of the freon,at different points in the system. I also found that power points and dvd works really well. Then I will show them each part in the system , the students then visualize the part and how it works?

Hi Becky, Thanks for your post to the forum. Congratulations! Too many people have been subjected to death by PowerPoint! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I like to incorporate colorful and sometimes animated power points as one of my instructional tools. Sometimes power points can be dry and boring, but if implemented right and using creativity, it can be a very effective learning tool.

Powerpoint and other media, reference photos, video...

Since these are visual learners, they learn by remembering colors, patterns, sequences they have seen. So an instructors would use flash cards, picture associations, a powerpoint slides, any type of diagram, videos, and books for students to learn new material.

Hi Donald, Thanks for your post to the forum. Excellent strategy for kinesthetic learners also! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

As I lecture, I like to pass around items related to the subject matter for the students to examine, dismantle and assemble when applicable. sometimes I may pass around an item just so that the students can see what is being discussed as opposed to just seeing a picture on a screen or textbook.

Hi Andrea, Thanks for your post to the forum. The beauty of creating the videos would be that once they are finished they can be used continuously! Since you are already grading a kinesthetic activity (their drawings) I think using multiple choice is fine.

I teach drawing classes to Interior Design students. The best way for me to explain how they need to approach a drawing and complete it is to actually demonstrate the drawing. I talk about each move that I make and the rationale behind what I am doing, for example, i mention that I am rolling my lead holder as I pull it across the page in order to keep my point sharper and more consistent. I think it helps, but they often don't work on the drawing after class until a day or two before the next class, and so they don't have as much of the tips and tricks available. I had tried working with another program in my school do develop videos that the students could download to view the demonstrations again, but we only got one session produced. I think having all the sessions video-recorded would be a great help to my visual/kinesthetic learners.

I am wondering what kinds of assessments would work best for them, though. Their drawings are graded, but I am required to give them quizzes on the material as well. Most of the quizzes are multiple choice, but I am beginning to think that some of them may not be able to do well on them due to learning style preferences. What do you think?

Hi Efrain, Thanks for your post to the forum. You mention having students relate what they are learning to real life - so important!

I too use multimedia: Powerpoints, pictures, videos, internet. I am a visual learner myself. So it helps me relate to what some of these students need. I am really fond of connecting what i teach to real life situations. In hope that they can make the connections easier, at least some of them when they see a real life example.

Hi Fanci, Thank you - I am glad that you enjoyed the course! Thanks also for sharing some great ideas for visual learners!

Hello! Thank you for this wonderfully informative course! I really enjoyed it!

Some creative instructional strategies for working with visual learners could include: good, clear pictures, that go along with abstract subject matter, posters, informational and educational programming, educational cartoons that connect abstract subject matter in simple terms, etc...

Thanks again!
