I guess I am an "old school" teacher too because this is what I teach as well.

As an "old school" English teacher I teach my students to use one less comma than the number of items in a series (i.e. a series of three items needs two commas). However, I also tell them that this is MY preference, and they will frequently see the final comma omitted as it is sometimes considered optional. I explain it this way: It's always correct to insert the final comma, but it is sometimes incorrect to leave it out. Why risk it?

These are good examples, Donna. I have seen varainces in the rule for commas in a series. Which do you employ?
