I find it helpful to give students a sample research paper in proper APA format so they have a template to go by when doing papers for me.

A visual, tangible example helps explain the required work, sets the the "achievement bar" and gives the student the idea that if other students could sucessfully complete the project, so could they.
I feel showing examples of other students work is not a good practice, some student may not have the capability to do the same quality of work, and be discouraged, and not extend themselves to do better.
I feel that by showing students examples of the work they will be doing in an upcoming course, it gets them excited to learn the material and also prepares them for what to expect. They get an opportunity to see what is in store for them.
so that their expections will be properly outlined.
Hi Charles,
I see your point! I have come to realize that some students are content being average, however I push them to their limit.
Patricia
If I am doing something for the first time, I do better if I have an example to follow. So I provide my students with an example of what I expect their finished product to look like along with a the grading rubric so they know exactly what they are being graded on.
Sara Donevant
Because this will give them an example of what is expected of them on certain upcoming assignments.
It provides them with a guideline to assist them with successfully completely the coarse. The more information students have the better prepared they feel and the more motivated they are.
While showing the difference between an "A" and "F" product is useful, showing a "B" and "C" product can be counterproductive. Some students will do the minimum necessary to pass and you are showing them how to do that.
It makes them more comfortable with doing the tasks.
Hi Ann,
Absolutely, it is just as important for students to know what not to do as it is for them to know what to do.
Patricia
It is important to show examples of student work because some students see the assignmenat as unmanageable, but when they see a finished one, they feel more at ease. I think it is also important for students to see not just A products but some C's and D's. This shows them what not to do.
I've found that giving students examples of work help elaborate the expectations you have for your students. It can help clarify the level of work that will need to be completed and also give them an example of material they might be learning.
So you can give them a glimpse of what's in store for them as far as requirements, & how you plan on presenting the material.
Simply put...
This gives the motivation to visualise what can be in their minds.
Hi Linda,
Seeing an example gives students the confidence and motivation they need to complete the project/assignment.
Patricia
Hi Angel,
You're right, interpretations can vary. A visual provides great clarity.
Patricia
Because they will see the real application of the materials. This way the students will be more engaged in learning the materials.
This will give them a better idea of what kind of "finished product" the students need to turn in for their assignments. They way people interpret things can be very different to each individual. Showing examples will help clear most of the confusion.
