How do you assist students who do not know their basic Mathematics?

An example lies in teaching addition and subtraction of fractions. This can be very frustrating, especially when the students do not know their multiplication tables. They seem to depend on your teaching skills in the class room only, and not to make personal efforts at home (i.e. after giving them home work). Some may say "this is why you are the instructor and I am here for you to teach me". I teach Pharmacy Tech. and math is essential. I am trying to find a way to motivate students who are not mathematically inclined. I welcome suggestions.

Stress Management

I have learned that for career school instructors stress is produced from the instructor's workplace and personal life.  It is critical to create a stress list and identify stressors that can be eliminated or reduced.  Then with the remaining stressors one can use healthy techniques for dealing with the stress.  My goal for the new year is to determine which of my stressors I can eliminate or reduce.  I will attempt to work on one stressor at a time that I can eliminate or reduce.

classroom management

be more conscientious with stating course objectives and required deadlines. students need to know expectations.

Learning disabilities

I had not previously sought to be able to identify and accommodste students'  needs with learning disabilities. I will assess reading, writing and test taking abilities much more carefully

Soft Skills-things to remember

ED 115 on Soft Skills reminds us that information and our technical knowledge
about our course is only 15% of our success per studies conducted. It is a good
reminder - without appropriate attitude and empathy - we will not succeed.

ED101

Being a first year instructor this course gave me great tools to use.  Especially time management and new ideas on lectures.

I would recommend this course.

I would recomend this course.  It was very insightful in many areas.  It gave me a better understanding on how to utuitlize my time for time management.  I also  learned how impotant it is to be well prepared and stay on the course plan that you have outlined.

EL 102

I just completed EL 102. The course was very good in that it reinforced what we try to practice in our online classrooms were I work. I have heard alot of retoric from schools that "suggest" the proper ways to manage and teach online. I feel this course emobided the Best Practices.

ED 104

I have just finished going through the Ed 104 course today and it was wonderful. It is good to know how to manage your classroom, especially handling the angry students. I have been having struggles with that aspect not knowing how to really handle them. This course has been an eye opener for me.

New to Teaching

I have only been teaching for a short time just a few months. My first day in class I was very nervous and did not know what to expect. I wish I would have taken this course prior to that first day because I think I would have been better prepared. I feel that I gained very valueble knowledge through this course. I am excited to start using the things I have learned. I know my students will benefit greatly from my taking this course. I am going to start applying and implementing the things I have learned right away.… >>>

Adult attention spans

Within this course, I learned why students do not answer question as quickly within my lectures as they would within the first 10-15 minutes of class, because as an adult our attention span is 15-18 minutes.  This is very interesting because I thought we had great attention spans, as we got older.  Now, that I know that my student’s attention span needs to be recharge after about 13 minutes into the chat, I will look for new strategies to entice them into refocusing.  I do know by using the different learning styles within the chats help with the attention span… >>>

ED 103

Knowing the learning adjectives and stills for the students is most important thing.

ED310

I appreciate the many learning games to use with the student to keep them interested and on track.  I remember when I was in medical terminology it was very boring.  Thanks for everything.

ED 101

I really liked this course. I was surprised to learn that most adults only have a 15-18 minutes attention span, remember only 25% of what you hear, 40% of what you read & you hear 4x faster than you speak.  I liked the ideas about icebreakers in class - the 3x5 cards, having the students get to know each other.

I would highly recommend this course for any instructor just starting out.  It has lots of good ideas.

ED103

We have a class that addresses learning styles built into our curriculum, so I was somewhat familiar with learning style assessments. Currently I try to address the different learning styles on a daily basis. I did learn a lot about the various exam styles and I plan to implement this information immediately. However, I believe it is just as important to use different styles of testing when addressing a diverse group of students.

ED 105

Nice appreciation for the different styles that we all bring to the podium, and good realization that will be encountered in the work arena as well. Excellent point of the focus of training on repetitive tasks or situational reactions. Integration of knowledge with physical activity appreciated due to direct correlation to personal experience. Highlighted aresa of "many things in life are scored". Wonderful to be supported in grading techniques.

EL107

Most challenging of the online courses that I have taken so far. Having never taught a hybrid course (I teach both online and on campus) I was able to learn many new things.
