Questioning?

Hi, I learned that you should ask specific students specific questions that are open ended. Is this a good strategy? Thanks, Andy

Learning Math

Hi, I teach math and have noticed that there seems to be more visual learners nowadays. Is this a correct assumption, that current media has swayed the populous into a certain preferred mold of learning? For instance, a tv generation may be more visual while a computer generation is more kinesthetic. Thanks, Andy

Learning as you are actively doing it.

Learning is a complex process. It is also depends on the individual who is learning. Everybody has a preferred ways of learning. Somebody learn by listening, some from reading and some by doing or applying. Which methods give a permanent or long lasting learning is also different based on individuals. But still you need multiple ways of teaching. One only method will not complete the whole learning process. We need to lecture then demonstrate the process and then let the students do by themselves.Ultimately active learning is needed because student will have to do the same thing in the jobs what they learn in the class.

Testing formate

Base your texting format on the reaction of the class during lecture.

Learning your students

Knowing your student will help better your teaching method

STudent Participation

Evaluate your lecture and involve all student with come back questions.

Evaluate study habits

One of the way to better teach your student is to evaluate there study habbits

Evaluation

I have implemented these exercisie in my class establishing the students level of learning or the previous instructors had already informed me about certain students. I will aslo do an evaluation of the students,. I am teaching anatomy and physiology. Students may not be able to grasp this module effectively, it takes time for this course. Students that come to me are from front office and it may take awhile for some of the students to adapt to this module. I play games to enhance their learning capablities and learning with the medical challenge. It seems to work.

Delivering Course Contact

Stick to what is in the syllabus. By doing so, you will keep the students in the same areana. If you're all over the map, then your students will be all over the map.

meeting the class for the 1st time

Upon meeting the class for the 1st time, one should keep it very professional. Don't let your guard down and show favoritism to a friend who is now a student. Set the tone upfront. I've been in classes where a co worker was the Course director and called me out by my 1st name on day one, folks then begun to look at me as 1. a spy and 2. like I was the teacher's pet and would pass not matter what. Keep it professional.

Getting to Know Your Students

A 2 - 3 minute "Introduce Yourself" will enable each student to give a brief picture on them self and allow fellow students to pick out things that they may have in common which in turn will form a bond through out the class time. I feel this is very important.

Instructional Style

I like Michael am also very lucky where I work. We have a 2 weeks Course called MOIC, Method's of Instruction which provides the tools to become an instructor. You have to provide briefings and write lesson plans. I am one of the lowest ranking people in my university and I am allowed/encouraged to attend, although at the current time, my duites do not require me to attend. I will attend in January 2014 which will open many doors for me down the road.

Keeping the no so interested student involved

This is my biggest challenge. There is always at least one student that doesnt want to be there and its hard to keep them involved.

Four-letter words

I teach design and my students have a fair amount of studio time to work on projects in class. Sometimes their casual talk contains four-letter expletives. I tend to let it slide, but wonder if I shouldn't. Any thoughts on this?

Open ended questions

How does one incoporate more open ended questions the first time teaching a course? There may be a few concepts here and there that the instructor doesn't fully understand yet so the tendency is to only ask closed questions. Any tips?
