Words related to area of concentration

I fing that students respond well to learning words specifically related to their field. They strive to learn not only to spell the words but to learn the definitions. I find that giving extra-credit for definitions inspires them to write the definitions and be able to verbally repeat them. It makes the students more receptive to the learning strategies set forth by the instructor. Pat McCoy

Instructor

As an instructor we have to help the students to understand their role and help them to understand our role we have to be positive so they can learn and want to continue with the course.

Incorporating each students input into a project

To incorporate each students input into a project lets the student know that he/she is really a part of the team and not just a spectator. Ask pointed questions that each one has to answer. Give certain projects for each student with the premise that they can interchange projects if one is more feasible than another and both parties are in agreement. I think people do better when they are comfortable with whatever they can adequately bring to the table.

teaching styl es have to be a focus

Not an instructor around can be effective without taking this into consideration. Training teachers to lesson plan & review their plan is essential for assessments of any effective style. Most teacged s dobg know the ratio I f auditor y to visual to kinesthetic. Managers need a ways to motivate their teams to understand h ow important this is.

Wait time

I am happy to receive instruction regarding wait times; including all learners, not only those I assume will know the answers. I try to be cautious not to embarrass any student when questioning. Sometimes, I will announce first that my upcoming question is a difficult one, and I won't find fault or be disappointed if it goes unanswered. I always strive to keep my learning environment a safe one.

Getting too involved with students personl lives

As instructors and educators, we care about our students, but how do we maintain the professional boundry without becoming too involved with the students personal life?

You want what?

Do your students know what to expect from your class. What will they be learning? Will it be presented in such a way that they will remember what you said.

Know your Students

It's important to know the type of learning method that works for your students. You will have less frustration, both in them and you if you know this.

Prepare

Do you have everything? To Do Lists are my friend. They need to believe in you and in what you know. That it's what they need to know.

Learning environment

Why should I be here? Is this what I want for my future? Are students asking these questions? These should be answered quickly with a YES! and the WHY they should behind that. If you don't believe in your subject matter, then who will. Your the "expert" (to the student), so show that you are enthusiastic about it.

Areas of Competency

It's important to be knowledgable of your subject matter and to be fluent in using it. Simply knowing does not make a good instructor. What are some ways to utilize the information of your subject so that the student REALLY wants to learn more about it?

Keeping them engaged

Im a big fan of short lectures. You can see it when they start to drift away. Being long winded is means I'm not keeping up with there needs. I have to step back sometimes.

Being clear

Being very clear on what is going to take place during the class is very important. I don't like to leave anything that can be turned in a differant direction.

Goals

Letting the students know what the expected outcome of a phase is from start to finish gives them a clear view of what they need to do. Its good to remind them. Keep them engaged!

Role Model

To me one of the most important things in teaching is leading by example. Hands down!!!!! There is no way to gain respect and trust with a do as I say not as I do attitude.

Slower students

The main thing I have found with students with reading problems is they don't want anyone to know. when I think they have a problem I will talk to them outside the classroom and let them know that I will make sure they understand what we are covering. It seems to put them at ease.

English!

It is hard for me to relate the meanings of some words to my students that dont have much english skills. I can sometimes look for words or describe a situation that helps them understand

Student groups

Groups don't allways work well with my content or student base. I make sure that I am moving and engaging all students and learning from ther reactions to me how I might could enhance participation in the class

Moving and eye contact

Just the tone of my voice can spark interest and is easy to see. By beeing up beat stron voiced allways positive and happy never fails with getting most of my stundent on the same field as equals almost.

testing

i enjoy creating pretest for my students to form my review before testing
