Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Developing your communication skills

There's no doubt that good communication makes all the difference in the world. Communication is on the top of the list for most students with their instructor. In developing my ommunication skills, I look back at my expereience as a student and ask myself how can I best communicate with my students, what was missing for me and I use that as a quide-line. Keeping in touch with my Association, News papers, and any other source I can extract information from helps with my communication skills.

Using Multiple Testing Formats

If we as instructors use multiple testing formats for our students, because of the difference in formats the student will need to put forth perhaps a little more effect for the exam. This is to the benefit of the student.

Critical and Analytical Thinking in Active Learning

I think that active learning in the classroom is a great tool for students because it allows them to engage themselves in both analytical and critical thinking. Working all aspects of their brain. It allows them to utilize the various resources available to them engaging each other, the teacher,to discover the most useful information.

Allowing students to introduce another student

Some students are really, really shy and when you ask them to introduce themselves they normally talk very soft and just say their name. When you allow time in class for them to select a partner and they tell them a little about themselves, they forget all about being shy. It's normally easier to introduce someone else rather than yourself.

Course work not directly related to the field of study

What are some ways you work with students and the coursework that aren't directly related to their area of study, i.e. they have less time/energy put into learning the material?

retention

discussion and real world application raises engagement of content leading to experience which leads to confidence which leads to the possibility of achievement which in turn drives achievement. if they don' believe they can, they won't.

dynamics

movement and making games engages students in the content but also creates the feeling of searching, finding, and achieving.

sensory overload

distraction with all this activity my draw students' attention away from the class and the content.

accelerated environment

organization and content management reduces being sidetracked in instruction

difficiencies

encouragement and support along with providing them with how to access other resources for assistance outside of the classroom adds to the success of the student

student groups

small groups lead to big results. i keep groups to no more than 3 to a group. This maintains intimacy and reduces the opportunities for conflict to overcome the group.

communication

mixing subject matter words into discussion and giving a simple definition of those words help to draw students into the subject itself, making those words a part of them.

When things dont go as planned to intial syllabus

When there are unexpected snow days, or times that student dont even show to class, planned lectures are often moved back. How should the instructor approach the situation?

First time teaching and students are argueing text book material

My first time teaching, I was instructed to teach out of the book. If I notice an error I would take it the head department and discuss it with them, but what do you do when a student insist the text book is wrong when really it isn't? They believe because they found it on a website that its reliable, and the test question should be changed.

Lesson plans and new instructors

Since the field of teaching is new to me, I can see how lessions plans are an important tool. Are there any online resources available with examples?

Evaluating Success

What role does exams play in detrmining success?

The importance of oral and written communication

Emphasize standards of your field, requiring students to communicate effectively and professionally.

Importance of Questions by Instructors

Education should be a dialogue, an exchange between instructor and student.Give students a chance to ask questions. Encourage questions. Questions will tell you what students understand/don't understand about what you are teaching.

Teaching Styles VS Learning Styles

Are some students discriminated against by your teaching style? Is your teaching style biased to some learning styles?

Effective diagnostic development

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for effective diagnostic development. Normally I use diagnostic to test students vocabulary and ability to recall facts.
