Recording devices

I have a student with cerebral Palsy and visual problems. I allow her to pull her wheelchair close to the front of the room and also allow her to record every class session. This woman is amazing and I am glad to have her as a student

reading and writing in other languages

One thing that puts my students at ease when speaking about the Difficulties of the English language is spending one on one time to encourage them that this to will become stronger for them. I noticed self esteem issues can result id not helped

student monitoring

I have found in my experience when students try to float to the back of the room they try more than less to remove themselves form the radar emotionally. I conduct student monitoring the first day back to front

Eye contact

Eye contact is something that is of great value in American culture. It symbolizes respect and leadership qualities, but when used in other cultures such as Eastern cultures it can be misinterpreted as disrespectful. Just food for thought

Instructor Competencies

Definitions are so important in healthcare education, for reasons of commom/mutual understanding, and for continuity within a learning situation. The breakdown and identification of these three areas of "Instructor Competencies" is helpful in building a "map" of key instructor qualities, to help insure competency within the classroom... not only for the instructor, but also for the quality of education provided to the students.

Three things about me

In one of my previous jobs we had an exercise where we had to tell 3 things about ourselves. 2 are true, 1 is not. Other students in the class need to find the item that is not true. Is this a good first day exercise or is it too corporate?

New instructor

I'm a new instructor in the university setting. I have worked professionally in sales and graphic design and am now entering the instructional venue. I'm very excited to get started and was wondering which of my existing skill sets do you think would be most valuable to start: 1) my sales background, or 2) my technical background and why? Thanks.

New instructor

I'm going to be teaching for the first time in a few weeks, and I'm really nervous about it. I'm comfortable with my subject material, but just afraid of the unknown. Any good tips for a new instructor? How do I keep their attention when I have to cover lecture material that may not be the most exciting?

Learning styles in culinary school

Hi! I teach at a culinary school and as far as I can tell I'm using all sorts of methods that cater to the different learning styles. I have lectures, and lectures with powerpoints, demonstrations and everyday the students get hands-on experience with their dishes yet I still have students who do not do well in class. What else can I do? Thanks in advance for the feedback!

working with student with learning disabilities

Learning disabilities can be taxing on the student and the instructor. However it can also be very rewarding when a student who struggles becomes successful. It can be accomplished with patients and flexibility on the instructors part.

diverse learner

The diverse learner is a type of person who learns in many ways. I think it is important to offer different types of learning such as verbal, tactile, visual and auditory. Without different means of delivery it is difficult to reach a large group of students

monitoring students

Monitoring students is important for an instructor to get an idea of how the students are receiving information and processing it. For some students it is difficult to verbalize to an instructor that maybe they don't understand a concept. Monitoring helps the instructor decide if it is necessary to change the means of a lesson to accomodate more students

Recognizing the symptoms and ackowledgement of them

I have recognized some the symptoms of learning disabilities through homework assignments, etc. I am still trying to figure out how to best talk to them to offer help without making them (the students) feel awkward

learning styles

each student brings something different to the classroom and it is the faculty members responsibility to acknowledge this style and teach accordingly

Speaking too quickly

I have a tendancy to get excited in my class when I am teaching and I start talking very fast. I inform my students before class starts that if I do that to let me know. I find my teaching fun and enjoyable and don't always realize how quickly I talk until someone lets me know. By getting the students to let me know it not only helps me, but it helps them because I know they are paying attention in class.

Being consistent with different backgrounds

I teach a general education course that has students from ages 18-60. I enjoy the different experiences everyone brings to the table, but I sometimes struggle since many of the younger students feel very comfortable with my online components while older students in their first class feel left out and behind... Any suggestions to help make this transition easier?
