Student Work Groups

I let students know that they cannot always 'pare' with their buddy...unevent pairing prepares for the work place

The Voice of an Instructor

Practice your voice be strong and not loud do not yell/keep it conversational

Participation

When you notice a participant continuously asking longwinded questions, vaguely touching on the current topic, how do you address this in alternative ways when you've addressed it appropriately but the message isn't getting across.

Adapting to learning styles

In what ways can group interaction compensate for a teacher's teaching style

Using groups with self-paced classes

Most of the classes I teach are self paced and computer based. I would be interested in how you have used groups in a self-paced environment.

Questioning

As a librarian, I am always asking questions of my patrons to help them to develop an inquiring mind. The students must learn how to logically think about their research projects and what type of resources will best fit their end goal in writing a research paper. This means I need to help them by asking questions of them about the resources that they are using. Is Wikipedia, the best resource to use for a college research paper? How, do they know that the website that they found is accurate? How, do would you find a resource in the library, or on its website? I am always asking these questions and I feel they really help students to understand where the best information can be found. It also helps them become lifelong learners.

Library users style of learning

Each student who comes into our library has their own way of learning information. It's important that librarians determine what method will help him/her find the information needed to complete the assignment. Will, a student need a couple one on one sessions, or a quick tour or how to get around the library. I have found that the best way to assist is to listen and ask questions - it's the best way of finding out what your students need.

Hands on learning objectives

As, a librarian, it is my goal to assist students with their research and citation of their research. I design, hands on "tests" that help students understand how to use the library. I don't often have to use a test, but I do quiz them while they are using the library's resources.

Scavenger Hunts

Scavenger hunts: I use them to help students learn how to use the resources of the library. Since, they have to search the library and the library’s website for the correct answer, they are learning about the library. They are filling out short answers to questions that are designed to move their learning levels in research in order to do an excellent job in their classes and in their future careers.

Lecture Notes

The one main point that I got out of this topic was makings sure lecture notes are efficient. Being prepared in your lecture by having notes will allow you to be prepared and make sure you cover each topic for that specific day. Make sure you practice your lecture and review the notes before class.

Meeting for class

Here is the tips I have for meeting for class for the first time: Come prepared Introduce yourself Get to know your students Provide an overview of what they expect to get from the class Be proffesional-dress for success

Checklist and Syllabus

The most important element to a class I believe is the syllabus. This ensures that every students knows the class expectations, deadlines, and what the class will be about. I also will utilize the checklist idea to make sure that I am fully prepared to offer the best service possible to my students.

How to be effective

Model, Motivate and Manage are a great way to ensure your class is engaged and you are delivering the best knowledge possible. Model- Be a role model. If you come prepared and you knowledgeable in your field the students will look up to you. Motivation- is something that is important because if you do not motivate your students they may not get the most of the class. Ways to motivate them would be engaging in fun activities and keep everyone involved. Manage- manage your class, time, and the knowledge you will deliver.

Student Evaluations and self delusion...

What is the rule of thumb for taking student evaluations to heart? I generally get a few great comments and a few awful comments. I try to take both with a grain of salt... It seems to me, most of the time that the students with the great comments did well in the course and the students that didn't do well felt obliged to blame the instructor... I'm constantly amazed at the ability of humans to convince themselves of ________ (fill in the blank). How can an instructor keep from convincing himself (or herself) that he's doing a great job when he really isn't? I'm not so worried about the converse, it seems to me that that particular scenario would take care of itself.

What to Do When You have Too Much Material to Cover

I've been struggling with course management and trying to keep learning delivery varied and interesting. I know students learn better if you can make it hands on, but too frequently I've found that it takes there's so much material I MUST get in front of them and found myself having to lecture and PowerPoint than I'd like. Any suggestions?

First Day

A good way for me to learn about my students' learning styles is to play games with them on the first day of class. For example, I have students listen to my background information (education, likes, and dislikes) and "quiz" them on the information. I also write this information on the board and show pictures of things. This helps me identify how the students remembered the information. Even though this is a college class, I like to play BINGO with the students on the first day. Don't you remember those days when you would have to get a classmate to sign a box of one thing that applies to him/her such as "Born in Texas" or "Has gone Scuba diving." This not only gets the students up and moving around, but also helps me identify who remembers meeting whom while getting up and meeting eachother.

new way to reach students

what type of learner are they

Essay

I feel essay questions can really tell me how much of the material is understood.

Questions in class

I feel asking questions helps students put themselves in really world positions that through problem solving will get them the answer i seek.

Student groups

I have learned from experience that there are always a few students who do not participate in class. By making group projects part of the curriculum, I can help involve them.
