Attention Spans

Since an average adult's attention span is between 15-18 minutes, how often should breakes be provided? How long should the breaks be? What should the class do when the instructor starts losing the students?

Scavenger Hunt

On my first day being with students, I need to ask each student to complete a scavenger hunt of the facility to become familiar with supplies, building structure, etc. When would be the best time to complete the scavenger hunt?

Course Planning

Once you establish all the materials you need to start as an instructor, how often should you change your course outline, syllabus, course objectives, etc.?

Motivator

As one of the roles of an instructor is to motivate his/her students, what are some of the techniques to use in dealing with resistance?

Gain their trust and get them to trust the process!

Gain their trust with your introduction and description of your experience level. Explain how this training will lead them to a similar rewarding career. Ask them to concentrate and trust the process that will get them there in a timely fashion. When you use specific time frames it becomes clear to the students that there is a process and by staying within it they can achieve their goals.

language barreries

right now we have a couple deaf students going to our school so we have signers to sign what we say and explain when questions arise this puts me on my best why because I speak Southern Yankee with a California accent. Tranlation how about a picture of lemonade or a warsher for that bolt. I have to clean up my English for my classes and I have to pay close attention to what I say and how I say it. Or the signer ask me to spell the word in questions.

facial expressions body language

these two give the most rememberable experience to me. I smile all the time. why ? because when I was in school one of my teachers used to roll her eyes or let her breathe out real fast when you asked questions, or didn't understand. I make sure I don't do those things. I present myself as it's the first time I was asked that question even if I had just answered that question. I might answer a little ndifferently because it is evident the student didn't understand the question or answer.

keeping the class awake

sometimes its hard to keep the students attention when they work and go to school.Mini lectures work well, walking around the classroom and keep good interaction with all syudents. Ask questions so you keep all involved.

Respect.

I feel respect is an important thing to have in the classroom. It must come from both instructor and student. As an instructor we cannot expect or demand it from the students without justification and it is likewise with the students. The first day of class sets the tone for the rest of the phase and what you do that day can have a dramatic impact on the instructor and student.

first class meeting

Even after prepareing for the first meeting with the class,I find a high percentage of my students do not keep the info available, and I end up with the same questions anyway.

Skill Level

I think it is very important to let students know your experience in the course you are teaching. Let the students know they can ask any questions related to course content and then have class discussion.

showtime

meeting our class for the first is an ambivalent feeling. We maybe a well prepared instructor did our research but when emotion overcome our preparedness something may happen. the important thing is checked our composure and know our equipment prior to the "show".

Cultural Difference - Teacher/Student

In my experience, students performance and classroom participation has some relation to their cultural background. Understanding some of these cultural differences among the students is vital for effective evaluation. For example, some students may know the content very well but scores low in a debate performance.

Bounderies

Bounderies are made in order to provide orderly conduct in the classroom and discipline needs to be established.Out of line student must be refocused on the subject at hand and let them know that as an instructor, we are the authority and respect in the classroom is the prime concern. as an instructor and a human being, how can we prevent our very own emotion spill over for the class not to see them? at times i think we are very poor dramatic actors.

when you deliver material, do it with confidence

your students will judge you by how you know and deliver material

set the stage on a positive but firm platform

the first 5 or ten minutes of each class will be the deciding factor for the rest of the class

good attitude, good appearance

always have the good attitude toward your class at all times, always look the part as well as be the part

Firm and Direct

On the first day of a new class I tend to get an important message across to the students. I am firm and direct letting the students know that I am the PACK LEADER. I go over the rules, objectives of the course and my expectations of my students. I tell them that my attitude will be a direct reflection of theirs. Once the message is sent, I tell them that it will be a fun class and very educational. I try to provide a positive and interactive learning environment. What are your thought?

Keeping their Attention for 5 hours

Attention span is directly related to the way that the material is presented. It is our job to "feel" how they are recieving our method at any given time and change up to keep every student on board. "Entertainer, comedian, producer and instructor." that was a key point to this module. I am still constantly chasing this, it is somtimes fun and sometimes frustrating in my opinion... but always an interesting challenge for me.

Technical Drawing as teaching aid

I wanted to share an approach to reaching different learners through the use of technical drawing excersizes. I instruct students in an automotive tech program on basic engine design and repair. One of the more difficult tests we have is on cylinder head designs, componets and service. While performing the usual "lecture" which reaches auditiry learners well, and showing power point presentations provided in our curriculum I have added a lengthy drawing of the componenets on the white board using many colors and labels. I ask the students to do their best to duplicate my drawing in their note books. I change the drawing three times, adding features and service procedures along the way and ask the students to make a total of three drawings in their notes. I leacture away while completing my own drawings. I have had such great success wit this that I hardly use the powerpoint presentation as a review for the students who learn best through reading, but the drawing/lecture takes up the majority of the time. I have seen a drastic improvement in the overall test scores since I started doing this drawing excersize and the students seem to be more engaged and enjoy that lecture. I studied drafting years ago and this no doubt helps me create better drawings that some other instructors, but I encourage others who may be good at drawing to use this tool and those who are not very good with technical drawing to seek help getting better at it so that their visual and tactile learers stay engaged and learn.
