Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Preperation

Having a plan and being prepared is important to keep your class focused and to reduce stress. Your students will follow your lead.

Professionalism

There is so much professionalism lacking today. Every day we have to lead by example.

First day, first impressioon

The first day is your first opportunity to make a connection. It is important for your students to know enough about you that they feel comfortable with you for that connection to be possible.

Great reminders

This course is a great reminder of things I haven't given much thought about in awhile.

testing

good information on guidelines for test writing.

test

I find if i review the material from the day before that will be on the test the students do much better.

X-CEPTIONAL EDUCATORS

Not everyone gets a chance to see the fruits of their hard work. Teaching students provides a channce to pass their knowledge on to the next generation and impact the profession on a much larger scope. For me teaching is more than reading from a book or grading assignments. It's a unique position that requires an instructor to connect with students on a personal/emotional level. I have been an instructor for 3 years now and I have truely enjoyed it!!! G. Martinez

Developing as an instructor

In my opinion, a key important part of developing as an instructor is to gain experience in different instructional classroom and lab environments.Remember your students want the information that you their instructor are able to provide them. Remember to have fun and display your passion for the subject matter to your students.

first impression

Once students have a direction to go in, they can focus on the expectations in place.

lecture

i think Q&A during lecture lets you know how the students are grasping the information.

training

We have had some training on this topic that has helped me alot.

It's easy to dismiss a small detail that ia actually very important.

I never thought that having the name of the class on the board was a big deal on the first day of class but it really would put students at ease of knowing they belong in that room.

Developing as an instructor

An instructor not only teaches career skills but also values that were omitted during previous educational years by others who lost the passion of teaching.

Student Introductions

Has anyone else ever tried this?: After a student has finished speaking about him/herself, I have each student introduce another student (randomly chosen by me). It's a slightly different spin on the intros and gives the students a chance to say something about a student they don't normally associate with.

Delivery of the information

Delivery of course information must be in a manner that can be understood by all students. This means that as an instructor we must be so flexible that any student can pick up the required information. This also means that class prep and training is key

First Day Expectations

The first day of the class sets the tone for the whole course. Bad habits allowed on the first day will be harder to fix later on in the course

yes and no

Day one i usually assign someone as a yes and assign someone to be no. That way when I ask a question and no one answers, i point to the correct answer person and they have to say yes/no. then i ask why is the answer what it is. it keeps them focused because they never know when i am going to point and they actually start to look foward to being put in the spotlight. and if they drift off i point just to see if they are paying attention.

day one sets the tone for the whole class

the first day is problably the most important because you set the rules, you tell the students what is expected of them and what you expect of them. this is why being prepared is important.

Remembering what you know

One of my biggest challenges was trying to put into words the theories and practices I've used in the field for the last 15 years. These are the things we learned when we were training to work in the field, but become almost automatic after years of practice. I find myself sometimes having to relearn the material, which helps to bring these theories and practices back to the surface.

discipline

We all at times need to enforce standards. How do we know how to enforce? should we follow to the letter or do we show a lenient approach?
