Following a schedule

All of the courses that I teach, we use a calander form of lesson plan. This is rough guide and each instructor is responsable for creating a more detailed day lesson plan.

Boy scout motto #1

Being prepared is always a good idea. It is the key to successful instruction. Taking into consideration the total environment is something most people do not consider especially as a less experienced teacher.

Growing as an instructor

Coming from a technical field and now teaching about that field is quite the change for me. Going over basic information like this is good as it breaks teaching down to basic pieces and allows you to better understand what is required to impart your knowledge to the learner.

Demonstration

Observation is one of the first and main aspects of the learning process. If a student is confused during this phase of our teachings, then the confusion will carry on to all the other parts. So it's really important for them to understand what we are trying to present to them. Hence demonstration holds a key to the lock of many students learning ability. We need to give a 120% in this part of the process so students will have a good basic knowledge of the topic going to be covered.

First Day Expectations

Every class is different, but I generally gage the success on the first day of a class by how much participation I am getting as the day goes on. Participation is an indicator of how comfortable the students are in their environment. As long as some sense of order is maintained, I like to have an open format where they can ask any questions even remotely pertinent to the subject, this keeps them engaged and learning right from the start.

Out of comfort zone

I tend to find that certain personalities thrive in this area or shut down. I'm looking for personel experiences and overcoming the butterflies so to speak.

Instructor as Life Coach

I have found that throughout my years of teaching, I tend to develop an almost coaching relationship with my students. Most of my students are adults--can be undergraduate or graduate but they are looking for someone who can help them navigate a path for educational, personal, and career success. Have you often found this as well? Darcy Tannehill

being prepared

it is essential to be prepared for the class for severeal reasons. 1) you dont have to stop and lose your rythem while lecturing to find a training aid. 2)telling the students what they are doing the next day prepares them for what they will learn 3) when you set up the class ahead you will find out if supplies are needed. plus it is just professional

Ugg Boots and Scrubs!!

How do you adress a student who is clearly violating school dress code?

Role Model

How do we become a Role Model for todays students.?

Preparation is the key

preparation is the key to presenting a lecture that will address the course objectives.

substitute teacher

As a substitute, and new teacher, I am having a hard time not taking personally the low attendance on the days I am there and the people that leave early. I try to be interesting and encouraging but feel frustrated that the students don't seem to take their own education too seriously.

learning styles

We find out each students learning style in their first course which enables us to use the information to educate them better. It works well when you can divide into groups by learning style.

course objectives

one thing I like to do is poll the students and find out what they want to get out of the course and anything that is not covered in the course out line I try to add it when it is applicable

Learning

No matter how my students learn, I always have them explain to me what they did. I feel this reinforces what they did, and gives them confidence in their ability to do this task the next time. As for teaching to different types of learners, it is my job to find out how they learn best and to educate them from there.

Motivator Role - Stark Change from Academia

I am rather new to teaching and have had no previous affiliation with career schools or online teaching. My professional and scholastic experiences have centered around traditional academia. So for me, the most difficult bit of teaching at a career school is the idea that I need to serve as a "cheerleader" to my students. I have no problem doing it and I am beginning to better understand this role, but I must confess that I am having difficulty shaking my previous experiences in which it was my responsibility to go to class and participate. My former teachers were always interested in the whereabouts and academic progress of students, if one elected to stop coming to class and turning in assignments, that, while frowned upon, was fine. It was the students decision. As a career school teacher, I feel like fulfilling the role of "motivator" almost steps over boundaries that I never felt teachers should cross. Has any one else grappled with this issue?

sometimes it helps to compare the material to something the learner knows. so the can get a better understanding.

first day

Make sure the students know what is expected of them the first day.

prepared

Always be prepared for lectures and demonstrations, so time is not wasted.

you can help a student, but make sure they do it on thier own so they can learn the material.
