Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Stay Involved

I always stay very involved with my students. Having personal conversations about them or myself, as long as the conversation doesn't cross the line, helps to keep me aware of any issues with them so I can help if it's needed

stress

I do agree with how much stress can effect our students. I teach a new phase of students every 3 weeks so the first day of each phase I really make sure it is a fun and relaxing day for them so I don't loose them due to stress

Retention

I have found that we really need to work hard to keep them. Yes we have to teach the students what they need, but it is just as important to engage them and use topics that they like and mix those topics into what I teach.

Bull's Eyes for Team

This graphic struck a cord with me. When I first started at my organization the role I assumed interacted with multiple departments at the campus. Getting that exposure helped me immensely when learning about my school and what we do. I learned the function of all of these separate departments and was able to see their value and how they all linked together to form the big picture. It has helped me when dealing with peers who don't appreciate the other teams and how they all connect. I am able to explain them the link between all the departments and how we couldn't be as successful without each other.

Expectations

Students expectations are set on the first day of class and should reinforced daily.

First week

It is very important that students due not miss anything in the first week. It determines if they really are taking school serious.

student support

It is very important for students to exchange information with one another just in case some one needs to car pool or is sick and can provide them with info they missed.

team work

Working together as a team in every department, helps the student be more active in knowing where to go and who to ask.

Holding students accountable

What is the best way to hold students accountable?

Interns

My students have developed as professionals by learning (hands_on) from other professionals in the industry.  The internship allows students to appreciate the craft and develop techniques that may not have been taught in class. Students enjoy learning from professionals that are active in the industry.  This allows students to bring theroy to real world practice.

RT105 - Raising the Bar to 'First-Class' Customer Service is a great course.

This online course will help me and my company to develop a perfect customer service.

I look forward to apply what I've learned, not only in the professional sphere, but also in the personal.

Thank you so much.

Rentention

I feel that we are obligated to our students to connect with them from the very first day of class. If students feel as though they are a part of something good, then they tend to stay engaged and want to come to class.

Best way to interact

Retention

Faculty should be involved with students from the first meeting at orientation. If faculty get to know each individual student, retention does improve.

How to help students stay connected

Understanding requires understanding

After watching a TED talk on teaching featuring Rita Pierson I realized she summed up retention in one simple concept. For you to be understood as a teacher you must first understand the student.

Commitment

I believe that it is paramount for the success of an organization that there is a commitment to students. There needs to be a commitment to customer service, improvement, and retention. All these commitments allow an organization to guarantee these non tangible products. How do you guarantee these areas?

Connecting with students

It seems that every class I have, the subject of dropping out comes up. I notice a connection with my students that tells me they know that I "get it" when I tell them my true personal story. I almost dropped out of my master's program years ago due to the death of someone close to me. One particular professor of mine was instrumental in making me hang in. I am forever thankful to her. I feel she payed it forward.

Being available, caring, and non-judgemental

With my students I always start by giving them my phone number. I tell them to let me know if they have a problem getting to class. The last thing I want is for them to feel like if they are 5-10 minutes late. they should not even show up. I don't wait for them to start teaching, but I feel like this understanding keeps them coming and motivated. I teach math, and they already feel intimidated from the get go. They are responsible for catching up, and I find they always do.
