Fears

Running a restaurant with many students who have never worked in one I find that breaking down the "big picture" in to manageable bites helps them be less apprehensive about the bigger picture of how day to day operations actually work.

orieantion

The more prepared the student on expectations of success the better.

teaching an learning

one of the things that must be remembered is not every one gets it the first time and sometimes not the third time be patient show different avenues of learning to get the same results In other words show different ways to get the same results Use different teachins styles take in new ideas talk with the students to see how they learn best don't be afraid to make mistakes but learn from them.

employment

this is one of the most important parts of educating the student. most don't understand the process and don't realize how important first interview is. be early be dressed appropriately have a reference cheat sheet talk with sincere voice control be prepared to give examples be prepared to do demostrations when the students returns help him feel good about himself if he gets the job celebrate if not try to find out why and help him interview better give encouragement let the student practice on you.

retetion

Our school has several differant times during the year when we address employment. We also keep track of all students who graduate and read Emails about thier sucess in getting a job. This really changes some students drive to want to finish all thier classes and in some cases they even want to do much better .

Customer Service

It is important to make the students realize that as the customer, they are entitled to the training they paid for. The challenge of not accepting the schools position on behavior, dress, and other "rules" is often part of the training. This should be addressed by the instructor at the beginning of a class so that students understand that their decisions to comply or to not comply, are often a result of the acceptance level of the training they seek. This expectation should be made clear through the Vision process to create a self image of the student after the education process and into the professional occupation they are seeking.

Student Success

If the students see the institution as more than just a building with classrooms, something that is a living, breathing community - a place of refuge in a lot of ways - but even more than that. I would like each student here understand that they are part of something very special. And it is - college is a very special place where people come together to learn, share and grow. Once a student is committed to this vision, I believe he or she will succeed.

Intervention

I think the thing we need to keep in mind is that we cannot "fix" anyone. Most of us are not qualified professional therapists to begin with, but that aside, our student's must learn how to handle and deal with their own problems. Of course, we should be there, to help them see the bootstrap, but they must be the owns to actually do the work. Still, it can be all too tempting to try and do everything for them, especially if we have become so invested in their success. But we must keep in mind that does them a disservice - they are here to learn a new set of skills and chief among them are new life skills - how to solve problems as they arise.

Stress

As a paralegal instructor, it is important that I teach my students about stress and stress management. I will not paint an unrealistic picture of the world for them - the legal world is often very stressful, with deadlines, commitments, and fears of making mistakes. That being said, I will always follow up with the simple truth that each one of my students is more than capable of dealing with all of these things. I like to tell them that they are the best of the best simply because they chose to be here - and that is what sets them apart.

Retention

I understand that retention is really a problem that everyone in the school must work together to deal with, however, as a faculty member, I only see "our" end of it. It may be helpful or at least informative if we knew what admissions or student services were doing about retention and maybe we could all work better together.

Students

I will be utilizing the information provided for retention for my students. this has really helped me alot.

Intervention

Great points for intervention. this was very helpful for me

Stress

How do you deal with students who come in with stress ? what has been your experience?

I know you!

I know my students by name. Anytime one student asks me a question I stop them and ask their names (first and last) and then they can proceed with their questions. It is very effective. I practice the same in a classroom setting. Student tell me their name each time they are addressed until I can call them by it. I am one of the lucky people that remember names rather quickly and they are always impressed

It's the little things we do sometimes!

I recently had a student who needed to fast track his education by staying late to attempt to complete all his required class and lab assignments. The area he was training in was his weakest point in the automotive field. This young man had the thoughts of leaving school to go train for his military duties he would soon be expected to perform as well. So, with an active military assignment and his current class assignments, hw had already started to expect the worst case outcome from fast tracking his education. Together him and I stayed after class late and helped him to get a better understanding of the area he was training in, with the one on one help, we found that even with the military duties and the fact that this was his worst area of expertise, we were able to get him through it, and in turn, just a little caring went along way, and the student scored very high on his written test and he performed very well on his hands on lab task. This being said he was able to leave for military duties with hopefully as clear of a mind set as we helped him with in class.

Students who are failing at midterm.

Any student with a failing grade at midterm is given a form that asks them to define why they believe they are failing, and has them set goals and measurable actions to improve their grades. For many of my students this is the first time they have set actual goals, and those that actually follow their plans do very well turning their grades around.

If students are customers...

And the customer is always right... Shouldn't they all be getting 4.0s?

Instructor Experience

On the first day of class we not only orient the student with their new surroundings but we introduce ourselves and talk about our experiences and all the wonderful opportunities that await them when they graduate. We also discuss student's past experiences and the reason they came to school instead of continuing on their previous path to help them define their "dream".

Community Involvement

One of the things we do at our school is to participate in a lot of community events. It is a great way to get our students involved together when we do special events for various charities such as Ronald McDonald House, Children's Hospital, and the local military base for wounded soldiers. The students not only have fun but form bonds while practicing their cooking skills.

Student Ambassador Program

Our school has a formal student mentoring program. Aside from outside office hours of the instructors, we have culinary students that wear blue neckerchiefs that students can easily locate and set up tutoring when the need arises.
