retention

Students need to feel that the instructor cares about whether they master the material or not. They also need to see that what they are learning has value to their educational process.

Retain Students

We speak of retaining as if we could do more than motivate the unmotivated, incourage the discouraged, instruct the unknowing and guide the academically lost. We are teachers and that is what we do - help keep our students hooked on knowledge. Lest we forget our passion.

Special Accommodations

Retention issues can also include students with special accommodation needs(in particular incoming new students to my online classes with special accommodation needs -- ADD, dyslexia, sometimes visual or hearing impairments, etc.) who may have needs that affect their learning. My experience has been that often these students are uninformed about how/where to connect with college resources to assist them. Sometimes, midway or later into the course material, they share in an email about their struggles and apologize, wondering what they can do to improve their coursework.

What are online faculty doing to encourage retention?

I work at an online school, and I am interested in how online faculty feel they contribute to retention.

Retention issues

One of the topics not addressed specifically with more input in our RT-101 course, was the retention issues of students with special accommodations needed.  (And whether, given FERPA, faculty would be allowed that insight, etc.)  In the past,  (I teach online courses) I've had students who explain their efforts to work with dyslexia, hearing impairments, visual needs, Attention Deficit Disorders, and other needs.  Often, this information from the students comes later in the class, after they are at risk and facing the all too familiar stressors that lead to their academic erosion and stagnation.  Typically, especially if newer students to college, they are not familiar with what resources are available to them.

Intelligent Heart

I understand the concept of intelligent heart but to maintain that intelligent heart everyday is a real challenge for me. This will be my new personal goal for the new year is to maintain a intelligent heart for my students.

Working as a Team

In organizations such as career colleges, we are all part of a unified team, it takes all departments within our organization to achieve the common goal of not only our company success but for our students success. Without all of us acting as a team our system and environment will fall apart and students will never reach the goals they have set for themselves, and we would not be able to help them see their vision and help them reach it.

Learn To Teach

To help students become motivated in their learning and educational experience we need to assure ourselves first that every individual within the entity of an institution inspire and motivate our students not to just listen to a lesson or orientation but to be a participant as well. We need to make sure we are teaching with the aspiration that not all students have the same learning style's and that we focus on all types of learning styles and abilities for student retention and success in their chosen career's.That in turn determines success and goal setting, along with retention.

Power of Vision

I firmly believe that we as Instructors play such an important roll in helping our students create a vision and then helping them achieve that vision, some students we have to give more encouragement too in order to help them see that the vision they have is a "realization for Their Success", and that makes our jobs as Instructors so vitally important. Our students count on us. How we perceive their "vision" is not as important as how we help them reach it!!Then we are successful and so are our students.

Accountability

I am a firm believer that when we hold our students accountable they are more receptive to their goals they have set for themselves because they know we have also set high goals for their success.

Team Work Always Works

Having a solid foundation in the business/school mission is very important. Having positive and active players is very important also. You want to make sure to have an open line of communication to ensure that everyone is on the same path.

Keeping A Smile On Your Face.....

Keeping a smile on your face not only causes those wonderful endorphins to flow through your body, it also creates an atmosphere that is very open to kindness and creativity.

Keeping A Positive Atmosphere

Making sure that a smile is on your face daily and a positive attitude is shown is very important for your students. Your mood creates the mood in your classroom and having a positive atmosphere is very important when it comes to having a productive class.

Placement Web sites

Has your school set up web pages to display student resumes and pictures? Also, what has your success been for this?

Attention I Must Mention:)

I always make sure that when giving attention to the class it is focused on the entire class. It may be a little unwise to give attention to only specific students. I do give individual attention to those students who have learning disabilities but, otherwise it's the entire class I give attention to.

WIIFM?

Honestly, I'm not sure. At the end of my first year as a nursing educator, I don't have an answer to that question. And that is a problem for me. hmmmm.....

Extended Orientations

Our typical orientation for our program lasts about 2 hours and we cover the most important items from the catalog and school policies. I am searching for new and exciting ways to engage the students from day one and implement extended orientations. Doe s anyone have any success stories, or suggestions that have worked for you?

Retention

I agree! Students need the on-going support of their instructors.  The instructors are usually the ones who can retain a close relationship with the students.  I try to maintain a close relationship with all of my students to help them understand that I care about their success in school and their futures.
