Hi Patti:
The problem with consistent disorganization from an instructor is the potential loss of credibility with the students, and the message it may send, which is “I’m not concerned enough about your learning to be organized for youâ€.

Being organized and prepared does at least two major things....
#1 Sets the instructor up for success in as much that the instructor is ahead of the game and is mentally prepared to deliver the content of the subject matter, in doing so the instructor is able to deliver the message in a more calm and relaxed fashion, the delivery will be better delivered and thus received by the student.
#2 The student is also set within an atmosphere conducive to better learning and preparedness, this will also teach the student how to prepare themselves for projects, tests and assignments. Set the example and the student will learn. The student will also be thankfull for the considerations of the instructor and respect will be forthcoming.
In my field, which involves the creative arts, I need to make use of many powerpoint presentations as well as audio examples, etc. I find that it is imperative for me to very prepared and organized, otherwise it becomes almost impossible to complete the seminar presentation. Also, it shows students that I am a professional and it sets a bar to achieve. A good professional example of the real world.
Physical organization is obvious, the need to be ready when the students arrive. The harder of preperations is to be mentally prepared; mind clear of distractors and ready set for the days topics. Without either of these two preparation steps complete, you are setting yourself up for selling the students short. You just are unable to "wing it" in education.
I agree being organized helps with preparation of the class, but it all so helps the instructor to get understanding of the student's abilities. For example, some student's are overwhelmed with in class worksheets that demands class participation to complete.

It is important for the instructor to be organized and prepared for each working day. Not having this opportunity to review and rethink materials that you teach only leaves room for uncertanity. Prepare for the class and the students will understand the importance of being on time and being prepared for the next business day.
It makes the students know you are serious about what you do and the education you are providing them
