Hi Sue:
That's true. In addition, what kind of message does it send the student if the instructor comes off disorganized?

Regards, Barry

Hi Kathleen:
As instructors, we need to keep in mind the messages we send to the students. What does disorganization do to our credibility?

Hi Cindy:
By appearing professional, we act as strong role models for our students.

Hi Cindy:
That's true. The other thing we have to be careful of as instructors is what messages we unintentionally send when we're disorganized. What does disorganization do to our credibility?

Regards, Barry

Hi Cindy:
And that's an important message to send to the students. Otherwise, we may lose credibility and impact our chances of holding the student's focus.

Hi Annette:
You are describing the strongest message about disorganization here - what message does it send to the students? Is that message going to have consequences to credibility, and will that impact the relationship amongst the group?

Regards, Barry

Hi Simon:
You point out two very important concepts here: organization impacts not only the student perception about the instructor and credibility for the istructor, but also can help the instructor's preparedness.

Hi Lisa:
Exactly - and as there can be a loss of credibility with the students, this can have a long term neagative impact on the relationship of the student and teacher.

Hi Michael:
Disorganization can send the wrong message to the students. That message can be detrimental to future learning due to the loss of credibility you mention.

Regards, Barry

Hi Michelle:
Exactly - the instructor ends up losing credibility with the group, which may have long term negative impacts to the rest of their teaching with that group.

Regards, Barry

Hi Michele:
That's right - if a an instructor is disorganized, it may send the wrong message to the student.
As instructors, we need to be mindful of what messages we send, both directly and indirectly.

to be as productive as possible

How can you ask the students to be prepared for class when you are not...I believe in leading by example. Organization is a must if you are going to present material in class, you have to have material ready to distribute to the student and it has to be neat and organized. Being prepared and organized also helps with teacher credibility.

To show the students that you are preperd to teach the subject matter; makes them motivate and you feel confidant.

I have posted office hours and on occassion have made special arrangements to tutor students off site. Tardiness in educators sends the wrong message for demonstrating work ethic.
What we do directly affects the learning potential of our students and overall measure of their success.

As a student, I hated it when my teachers were late. I was paying for the class and I wanted my money's worth! I always arrive early and let students know I am available before and after class to help them.

It shows them that you know what it is you intend for them to know.

This teaches the students respect and that you are interested in them.

I believe in being well prepared for class. I convey to my students at our first meeting what will be expected of them each class. I reconvey our class goals each class and remind them at the end of class what is expected of them before we have our next class. I always have my handouts prepared before class time. I make sure the students know what they are and how to use them. I also like to remind my students of how to get ahold of me and when I will be available.

Hi Walter:
Exactly - what kind of message does it send to the student if the instructor is disorganized?

As instructors, we always need to be aware of all types of messages we send to the students to avoid an unintentional influencing of the student's attitude.
