What age students are we talking about here. the expectation of an adult student is to behave in an adult manner. That is to attend class, listen, interact and to be respectful to the instructor and the other students.
Nature vs. Nurturing is a whole different aspect of the no child left behind theory failure. This stance is taken based on the fact that the adult student chooses to be in class to gain an advantage in the work force. They have freedom of choice not to be there, and also not to do the work but the grade they earn is often not tho their liking but they earned it the hard way.
I expect of them what I expect of myself, and that is a great deal more of everything.
I do not revel in the failure of any student but when no effort at all is put forth and expectation is to be passed anyway is misguided and contributing to continued failure in school, and in life.
Hi Stephen:
Exactly - what message does it send to the students when we are disorganized?
By considering this question, instructors will quickly come to the realization they want to send the most positive messages they can, in all ways.

Hi Richard:
Good point. We've all had instructors of both kinds here: disorganized, and the opposite.
One thing I can remember about disorganized instructors from my past was the message they unintentionally were sending by their behavior.
As instructors, we can all learn the value of presenting our lessons in an organized fashion.
Regards, Barry
I believe that this is important for two reasons. First, it is important to be a good role model for your students. If you come to class unprepared, students may feel like you don't take the class seriously, so they don't need to either. Second, you need to be organized to make the most out of the time that you have with your students. If you are constantly wasting class time trying to organize your material, you are wasting student time and money, as well as your time. Instructors should take advantage of every minute that they have to spend with their students.
I also put the homework assignments on the board before class. I include the assignments that are due during the next class session but also include the long-term class projects with due dates (just to serve as a constant reminder). This makes sure that everyone knows what I expect from them (even though it is already included on the syllabus) and no one can say that they didn't know it was due.
Hi Rebecca:
What kind of message does it send to the student if the instructor is disorganized?
As instructors we all need to constantly be aware of those hidden messages we may be sending, often without even being aware of it.
Regards, Barry
Hi Edward:
Another reason for good organization is the message it sends to the student.
Being organized can help support thenotion the teacher cares about the student's outcome.
Regards, Barry
Hi Tammy:
Also, if we come across as disorganized, it may send an untinentional message to the student that we don't care about their learning.

Hi Brenda:
What message does it send to the student if the instructor comes across as disorganized?
As instructors we always need to be aware of the messages we're sending, intentional or otherwise.
Regards, Barry
Hy Linnie:
Being disorganized can have the potentioal of sending the wrong message to the student group.
One way of preventing this is knowing the information front and back (of course), or by evaluating how a class went and how it can be improved.
Regards, Barry
Hi Janet:
As others have also indicated, we run the risk of losing credibility when appearing disorganized.
Regards, Barry
Hi Janet:
Exactly. If we lose credibility, it may be a long battle regaining it back.
Regards, Barry
Hi Brenda:
We've all had teachers that we may have felt were less than prepared. What message did it send to you when that happened?
While we try to be as prepared as possible, it may be a good idea to have one or two back up plans in case the discussion or lesson plan is floundering.
Regards, Barry
Hi Mark:
Perfect, you're describing how this disorganization may translate an unintentional message to the student. The least mightbe "I'm disorganized". The worst might be "I don't care about your learning".
Regards, Barry
Hi Khalia:
Another consideration is that instructors may feel less stress if adequately prepared with the material they bring to the students.
Regards, Barry
Hi Clifton:
That's a good way of describing this concept. Students may tend to lose credibility in the instructor's abilities if they feel the instructor doesn't know the information back and forth.
Regards, Barry
Hi Cindy:
You are aptly describing the loss of credibility a student may have for the instructor in this situation.
Another consideration about preparedness is the instructor may feel less stress about the information they need to deliver.
Regards, Barry
Hi Joel:
Another consideration is that the instructor may feel less stress when presenting the information to the students if he or she is adequately prepared with the information.
Regards, Barry
Hi Jennifer:
Correct - and by continually being organized, we give the student the impression we care about their learning outcomes.
Regards, Barry
Hi Judy:
Being prepared is paramount for maintain credibility with the student, and helping them feel you care about their learning.
