One of my main areas that I teach is medical coding. So, an example of a closed question I would pose to students would be how many volumes does the ICD-9 manual have? This question helps the student to recall information about the ICD-9 coding manual that we discussed previously in lecture. This question can be changed to an open question by getting the student to apply the use of those volumes through explaining the coding process for diagnostic coding. This closed question can be rephrased to the following open question: Explain how volumes 1,2, and 3 of the ICD-9 coding manual are used in the coding process to identify accurate diagnostic and procedural coding.
