I agree with showing students all options to resolcve a problem they are having. In the dental field there are many ways to do this. BUT- they must be familiar for what the most appropriate way to handle a situation in the field.

Getting caught off guard is not ideal in a learning environment. In this day and age I think we all want to know what we are getting into and how to prepare for it.

I also show students both good and bad examples to better clarify what is expected of them. Also, showing the cohort bad examples seems keep them from getting lazy and carelessly completing assignmnets.

Showing examples gives the students an idea of what is expected, it is visual and concrete. It can put the student at ease so that they focus more on the learning aspect of the course.

I believe it is important to show them examples of upcoming work so they can become acquainted with the course materials and begin their own self evaluations. They will be able to determine their current skill level and asses if their abilities are up to par and what they will need to do to make sure they will be successful.

Hi Eugene,
Examples are awesome, students are better informed with examples! It makes sense to students when examples are shared.

So they are visually educated and clearly informed on the objective.

Hi Mauricio,
Great clarity is provided when examples are shared.

Hi Annette,
Visual examples stick with students. Students will remember better if they are shown an example.

Patricia Scales

Absolutly I agree 100%. Examples help the overall understanding of the student

I agree, both as a student myself and as an instructor. When they have examples, this helps them to visualize what is expected. Plus, it frees up time answering the same questions over and over again on how to do an assignment.

Hi Laura,
This is also a great way to show students their growth from Day 1 to the end. Visual adds great clarity. A better understanding is gained by seeing.

Hi Paige,
This does not work well for every course; use this tactic in the courses that you can. Continue your approachin in billing and coding.

Patricia Scales

I find it hard in medical billing and coding to show good and bad work. They need to understand what they need to code. So I sit with them and help them find the key words to code or go over the what needs to be coded and what does not need to be coded. But every book is different and does not give the same reasoning for what is needed to be coded. So how do I show positive and negative work

I never thought about showing students bad examples, but that is a great idea where they can see what not to do.

Debra

I believe students like looking at another student's work where they can see what the final piece is composed of and what the expectations are.

I have several examples from former students' works in creating medication scenarios using 18 different ways to give meds. Within those 18 different ways to give meds, they are to use 18 different types of meds (one different med for each way to give the med i.e. in a major type of meds is oral but I want them to use the different types of oral meds such as tablet, GI tube, capsule, suspension, etc. This list constitutes 4 types of meds and with these meds the tablet could be tylenol, the GI tube med could be lasix, the liquid could be amoxicillin and the capsule could be Niacin (OTC). This constitutes 4 of the 18 scenarios. When I explain this to the students they look at me like I have 18 heads.

So I have permission from former students to show their creations to future classes. These examples help the new students create their scenarios. This assignment has been a wonderful learning experience for students new to my pharmacology class.

It requires that they study the chapter on the different ways that medications can be given and since the assignment is not due until the end of this course, with each class they become familiar with the different classification of meds.

This assignment requires that the students be creative as nursing is an art and a science. The students grumble at first but it is because they do not understand pharmacology but as the days pass, they start understanding what it is about and do a fabulous job. They even say that it did help them to learn.

students like to have something that they can model their work after. these exammple can help to clarify their questions and guide them in the right direction.

As a student I found assignments more stressful when not shown an example of what was expected. I would then get less out of the assignment because I was more worried about "am I doing it right" than learning the material.

Hi Peter,
Sharing examples are so helpful in many ways. It is a win-win situation for both instructors and students. Things are much more simplified when examples are shared.
