It is important for class management because we want to create a positive learning environment for our students and this will help set the stage.

It is important to have control of my classroom. The majority of the students are there for the education that I am supposed to deliver. If there are others who do not share those same interests it is unfair for those who care about their success.I expect a certain level of attention and interest from my students just as they expect a certain level of professional guidance from me. It is part of my job to make their learning experience as productive as possible. That means I must be able to manage situations that may arrise.

Excellent classroom management from the first day sets the stage and tone for student success and maximum use of the training time available. With fast track courses, instructors should make every effort to utilize all class time to prepare students for their chosen career. Being organized, prepared, and dedicated to sharing your knowledge with students in the most professional environment possible will facilitate a classroom atmosphere that simulates the workplace. Setting clear expectations for behavior and academic performance is conducive to successful student learning.

Hi Claire,
Control is everything. If the classroom environment is not conducive to learning, it can cause a serious retention problem.

If the class isn't managed, no one learns and no one has a good time. If one student dominates the discussion or is disruptive, people leave the class session with a negative feeling and may not want to return. Students like a class that's well managed, that moves in logical steps from one point to the next, and leaves them feeling that the instructor was in control the entire time.

Class management is critical to the mission of the class, I find that setting the tone on day one and being consistent works best for me...that, and not expecting my students to do anything that I would not, helps

Hi Jeffrey,
Classroom management needs to be enforced. Students deserve to have an environment that is conducive to learning.

If you can't manage the class you can't effectively teach the class and expect to see the results you want.

Student success is the name of the game. They are progressing to a higher level and will be able to grasp the dreams of being who ever it is they want to become. Not everyone wants the same thing out of life. It's growing up and learning that yes, I can really do this. Then you learn to not stop and just congratulate yourself, but you see that managing your skills and striving for that dream is manageable. Success and management go together. In class you learn to manage your time and learn the importance of prioritizing things that need to be done. You learn to challenge yourself, set goals, and complete the skills...challenge complete. Let's move on to the next level.

Class management is staying in control so students know what the ground rules are and there is less testing of the instructor. They will know when assignments are due and be told ahead of time when a test will be given. The leader of the class is the instructor and students will hopefully follow his or her lead.

A well-managed class is more likely to lead to a happy, successful class than a poorly-managed one. If everybody feels valued and heard, if issues are dealt with promptly and fairly, if the instructor practices what he/she preaches, success will follow.

Hi Robert,
Students need us and want us to control the learning atmosphere so that effective learning can take place. It is our jobs to be effective managers.

Class management is critical because most students are making great sacrifices (time, money, etc.) to be in that classroom and learn the necessary content. In essence, they "write our checks." So, it is critical that the instructor "manage" the classroom in all its aspects. They are responsible for delivering the content as well as promoting a conducive environment for learning.

Class management is synonymous with structure.

Some may have the opinion that structure is not a good thing. I would say structure is important, and yes there are some things that need to be unstructured (down time, free time, time to dream, create, etc).

In the class room the instructor needs to have a structure the students can feel they can depend on and that they are not on a high wire without a net.

With the security of structure in the classroom, students will then know the boundaries and yes there will be those students that test the boundaries; yet once the boundaries are established and maintained the class as a whole can settle in and know they are going to be taken care of.

It is important because if an instructor fails to manage their classroom. It can be chaos. Some students come to the class with a strong personality. They have very good instincts to scope the instructor to determine the style that is being presented in the classroom. They will try the instructor to see how much they can control the setting a little at a time. I have had this happen on a few occasions where students will come in and raise their hand after points are made in the lecture. They will then present a long personal story that most times will cause the class to deviate from what is being presented in the educational presentation. They are so savvy that if an instructor is not aware, the student can control the time that remains in the class, and the other students will not get lecture material. A wise instructor will make note of this pattern and limit the amount of time a student has to speak, as well as the amount of times that the student will be called upon to comment.

I would like to info in managing mentally ill students

Hi Eileen,
You are on point! The environment has to be conducive so that learning can effectively take place.
Patricia

Classroom managment is essential to establishing credibility. Our student population is looking for structure and classroom management is a foundational part of defining this structure.

Class management is a foundational piece of educational planning. If the class is not managed properly, the instructor loses credibility and the students are not provided with a learning environment. Class becomes a series of handling incidents instead of a learning process. Students will always push boundaries to see where the boundaries reside. It is important that those boundaries are clear, so the learning process can take place.

Hi Lacey,
It is the instructor's responsibility to ensure that the classroom environment is conducive for learning.
