Attempting to NOT foster dependency

One of the challanges I seem to face is making sure my students are staying on track with homework assignments, project progress and so on without allowing them to wait to be reminded. I provide a day by day schedule of events during the first class meeting, include verbal reminders at the end of each class as needed for upcoming items but some remain surprized when they miss a deadline or exclaim "Oh no we have a test today!". Any thoughts would be welcome.

Commute and ork place

Yes commute is a biggest stress specially for New yorkers. Early morning you got up on time and caught train on time and have very positive attitude, that you absolutely reaching to work on time everything was running smooth until you heard a announcement, conductor is announcing train will be late for indefinite time because we have disable train in front of our train. Train is in the tunnel, you are sitting in the train stressed, cell phone is not working under the tunnel so you are not able inform your manger that you are running late. This happened last week also because of bad weather and tacks got fire. What to explain he/she going to think you just making excuses every other week. So what you do.

orgnizing your office space

The school I teach we have around 10 instructors in on big room, some of them will continue to pile old exams, handouts, coffee cups and all kind of other things. Which invites reddens in the room and food smell. What can you do about these teachers, tried many times to talk to them no results. What to do.

I already learned about myself in the first module which will be of tremendous use in the future

Difficult Students

A student who comes to class and takes up time with disruptive behavior robs the other students of learning and should be dealt with quickly and effectively. Each student should be given the opportunity to learn in a positive enviornment. By dealing with difficult students quickly will show the rest of the class as an instructor you respect them as individuals and understand their want to learn.

Time manaemnet

To do list is piece of work which takes stress of urgency. It reminds of class exams, meetings, and all important tasks of your life.

Enjoying the Role of Guide, but still tested by students

I find myself as a "guide" in the teaching environment. I enjoy seeing the "light turn on" when a student understands and can execute a new concept. However, there are some students who are be "the bad apple" that can spoil an entire class. Often disciplining that student can turn the whole class against the instructor. I have found that establishing a new relationship with a class is necessary, especially when beginning work with a class that has been exclusively with another instructor....clean up work maybe? Any comments and suggestions to win over a "spoiled" class are welcome. I have found useful techniques, such as individual attention, personal interaction during tasks, and inclusive group lessons and activities.

keepiing students engaged

I use humor in my lecture presentation to keep students engaged. When a topic gets a little heavy, a little humor can lighten the students mood. Walking around the class during lecture also helps. Changing the volume of your lecture can awaken a slumbering student or two. Standing or sitting behind a lecturn and speaking with a monotone will cause the most engaged student to fall asleep!

A true teaching challenge

Working for a career college has opened up a whole new array of challenges for me which I mostly enjoy tackling but there is one student I just can't seem to work with. This student has real psychological diagnoses already & I feel ill equipped to deal with him. He is the "center of attention", "know-it-all" and does not respond to social ques. These seem to be all a part of his Aspergers, Turrets (sp?), and bipolar issues - yes he has all three! I don't see how he is going to make it in any work environment dealing with the public but his grades are fine on anything written. He is very disruptive. I will try all of the suggestions here & see if any work well. The cards didn't work for another instructor but I'll try that one again too.

Styles of classroom management

It would be nice if I can say that I am a perfect Guide. But I tend to be a Controller because I am a perfectionist. I am highly motivated, well-organized, wants to do a good job, and has a high expectation from my students. I love to be a Guide. I love the subjects that I teach. I do extra effort to make the class alive - using a lot of props as much as possible. Using a lot of examples when coding. I want an active class and not a passive one. I present rules and policies that I am expecting students to comply with on the first day of class. I do seating assignments to ensure students get to interact with each other - specially the quiet ones. I seat them so I can see each one of them. I also make sure that I call their names so they will know that I am aware that they I care about their learning skills. I monitor their activities and grades and make sure that my Director the progress of each student.

this can be a good icebreaker

Have each new student state three things about themselves - one being untrue. The rest of the class then tries to determine which is untrue. Everyone becomes invoved and it can be a lot of fun.

fail to provide variety in lectures

continous nonstop lectures are very boring and not helpful in learning. So some other means should be avalaible in between the lectures so as to make it more interesting and meaningful.

giving continous report on progess

giving continous feedback to the students regarding there work is the best option to push the students to achieve their goals and success in life.

communication

first of all the challenging syudents have to be identified and than handled on with individual one to one discussion

to understand the student psychology

student psychology plays a very important role in managing a student behavior.

Attention

I like to always have an energizer prepared for a lesson. It always keeps students engaged. What are some activities you do with your classes?

Activities

I can come up with some fun activities to keep everyone engaged in school, but sometimes my mind is blank. What are some of your ideas?
