Hi Charlene,
Students are very interested in seeing what is expected of them in the real world.

Hi Renae,
Nicely stated. I totally agree! I know of instructors that will share an average example as well.

Hi Nicole,
Visual adds better clarity. Most students will understand what is expected of them, if they can see what is expected of them.

It is important to show your students examples of the work they will be doing because it is an introduction to the field they will be studying. It also assures them as to what they are about to get themselves into and if they are still interested in that field.
By showing the students examples of work, you are setting a level of expectation. I agree with Mr. Mack that both good and bad examples (with explanations of the "good" and "bad") would be the best for the students to use as reference. I have found that showing examples always leads to better student work because many students choose to make their projects even better than the ("good")examples. It helps to clarify any confusion between the students and the instructor. Less time is spent trying to understand the project goals and more time is spent on "doing" the project. Therefore, the quality of projects is better and there is less confusion on expectations.
It is always a good idea to show examples to students because it gives them a guideline for how the assignment is to be completed. It also gives them a visual example to refer to.
Hi Jen,
Great points made! Students better understand when they have a visual. Many students are visual learners!!

Hi Krystal,
We need to keep our students as stress free as possible. Sharing examples is a way to minimize students' stress level.

Hi Oliver,
Students have a better understanding as to what is expected of them when they can see it!

Hi Martin,
You have it! Seeing is believing!

Showing examples of previous work completed by other students helps to:
1. Give students a "visual" of what you are expecting.
2. In my experience, it helps to set the bar. If a student sees that another student did an assignment well, they tend to want to follow suit.
3. It shows students that the assignment is accomplishable.
4. Seeing a student work example can also inspire students in many ways.
I find this technique most helpful in my Business classes. My students can get confused and overwhelmed with their business projects and having a model to follow takes a lot of the pressure off.
The advanced information can help to prepare the student for the course and will help the student pre plan for any difficulties that might arise while working the course. The knowledge might also help reduce the stress the student might be filling.
I have experienced that it's a good practice to let the students see work done by other students. It's a confidence booster that makes them feel and say "I can do that too!"
Hi Jeremy,
I love the motivation. All students love being placed on what I call the "Wall of Hall of Fame". It makes you very proud when your work is on display.

In my Criminal Investigations class, the students love to see how others have replicated crime scenes. They get excited to get into this class. They also know that the best project will be placed up in the classroom. It makes their work creative and competitive. It also shows them that they CAN do it, because others just like them have done it.
Hi Monte,
A great way to prepare is to share examples. Students have a better understanding as to what is expected of them when they can see an example.

To help prepare them for what is to come.
Hi Angel,
I agree! Visuals add get clarity and a better overall understanding as to what is expected.

I feel using visuals is great. Students tend to have a better understanding when visuals are used.
