Career Succes

When we teach the Career Success training we always have extra time adn always bring up externship because thats where they seam to have most questions. What else can we do?

Power Point

I dont feel that differents colors and font size make a difference in gaining interest of the students

Field Trips

That would be great, but we are no loner alound. Why is that?

Setting up grading system

I like the total point system leading to percentages. Student try for better grades and it is not hard for them to figure out their standing.

Study skills/habits

Today alot of our students have bad study habits. They are scanners not readers in the world of information technology. I use study groups and break down the information into smaller sections, it makes it less overwheling.

The importance of soft skills

Soft skills make up a major portion of career success. One can have the best skills but if they have a bad attitude, or are absent alot they will not have success in the real work world.

Bringing community into the classroom

I have thoroughly enjoyed bringing in guest speakers or going on a field trip with my students to bring more knowledge on the field into them as a class. I have found this very helpful in the learning process. I also keep in mind the mission of our college by understanding how our courses will fit into the college and their different classes. Power points done the correct way is also a very helpful learning process for my students. If it's printed out too small or too pale or boring, my students aren't as interested in the topic. If I print on bright colors and keep it at a max slides of 5 they are a bit more interested.

Assessing your students

By giving my students daily quiz's, I am evaluating how they are doing and where each student is in the learning process. I have found that this is very helpful in my teaching process as well. I also give my students back their quiz's/exams the very next class period and go through them as a class. I have made errors in the past and this is the best solution to giving my students the most available points possible. I have also found that giving my students who have missed my exam another version is a little trickier on the students. They feel they can talk to their classmates and get a good feeling for the quiz/exam. I don't find that is fair to my other students who were present for the exam, so I do give a different version to that student that had missed class.

A leader and class manager

You should believe in yourself, be excited about what you do and have the learning experience front and center. That is when you have their attention and focus on you, the leader and class management.

New Ways Of Thinking

Hi- In my classroom, my biggest goal is to help students discover different ways of thinking. To bring them to a new understanding of the world and to help them realize something they hadn't before. I think that many times people are not as successful as they could be, because they are never challenged to think outside of their "box." What is your challenge to your students?

Doing the best you can.

I think often when instructors are new, they forget that they have the knowledge necessary to be a good instructor. Sometimes it takes practice, but realizing that you know more than your students do, proves that you have something to offer. How do you remind yourself that you always have something to offer your students? Bobbi Bricker

Immediate results

For quizzes and finals, I go over this the very first thing during the day... A) It becomes a refresher and B) It make be asked again in the final so they should get the idea or concept. The students like the feedback because they feel that they know what they need to student more next and what to concentrate on for the next quiz. ~Louis

Giving pretests

On the first day of class, I have about 5 questions on the board to gauge where the students are coming from regarding the subject matter. Usually I will get a sense what the class knows or does not know. What other methods of pretests would you suggest? ~Louis

Serious comedy

My instructional style, many who teach with me know this, is presented with a sense of humor but at the same time, make you think? I like to engage my students and ask questions that will make them laugh first then think at the same time. Laughter produces the blood to move faster through the brain and wakes people up and I then engage them with insightful questions. I find that students are receptive to this and therefor do not find my class boring. ;-) ~Louis

Power Point Pictures

Should there be a limit on the number of demonstration pictures in a text power point presention?
