Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Extra Credit

Creating extra credit projects for students who did poorly on a test, a projector or to get the grade up. This gives them an insentive to better themselves It gives them hope of being able to pass the course. Knowing that they have to study or work harder toward their goals.

Keeping students interested.

How do we keep students interested in subject matter. We all have different learning skills. We need to access the class as a whole. We see the good the bad and the ugly. First, are students excited about taking the course? Second, is the instructor in tune with student needs? Third, get to know how each individal learns. What leavel are they at? I cover these points when in our first meeting. Make them comfortable.

Grading system

Introducing the grading system for each area, gives the student a plan to utilize and assess their individual progress and work toward optimal learning

Re-directing students

When students get "off track", redirecting them I find easier when I incorporate what they are talking about to the orignal topic or question

Use of Power Point

I prefer Power Point and give each student a paper copy so they do not spend time taking notes and concentrate on listening

Organization

Being prepared for class is showing the students your motivation to for their success...it displays organization to maximize the time you have to present material

Model Me.

I find the old Boy Scout's motto of "Be Prepared" fitting for this discussion. I like to give examples for every topic of discussion, such as, "we do it this way because" or "this is what happens when". My activities, attitude and conduct are also examples of how a professional looks and acts. Without realizing it, we are a continuous example of that. Good class preperation shows our students what preperation and professionalism looks like, even if it is not a direct part of the lesson. We show them what is acceptable. You do your best and hopefully, they will too.

Organized on several levels!

As a Technical school instructor it is just as critical that our tool boxes remain complete and up to date as our course handouts for the course curriculum. We utilize a tool box inventory system at the beginning and end of the class to insure each class (three per day)have tools. Written handouts are are always done in advance. All this gives the illusion to the students that we are organized on several levels.

role model

being one is very good cause it displays what kind of school your students come out of

extra credit

extra credit is needed cause sometimes students do try their best and need a little more of a boost!

pretest

pretests help studdents prepare for bigger tests

believe in yourself

always believe that you can do it!!!

keeping students informed daily.

I try to keep my students informed of their greades on a daily basis, this way they know exactly where they stand and where they need to improve.

Preparing For Different Learning Style

Because we all have a teaching style we're comfortable with, it can be difficult to prepare daily lesson plans that teach to all the different learning styles. I am usually well-prepared for all my classes and certainly consider myself an expert in many areas, but because of the sheer number of different classes I teach, I have a hard time changing things up or looking at a different approach -- especially when classes go well. How can I incorporate different teaching styles into lesson plans without completely rewriting them?

Relating to students

I work at a emergency veterinary clinic and use a lot of examples and take pictures so the students get an idea of what they will experience after graduation. It is amazing how many students engage in the talks and ask questions about outcomes and what we did for the patient.

Getting to know your students

I try to learn my students name by the first or second class meeting. When you call on a student by name, they have more of a connection with you and are more apt to open up to you on a personnel basis. I have had students come up to me and tell me that they can't read very well, now i know what kind of help to get them.

The personality of an instructor.

The personality of an instructor is a huge part of the class. Students either will think that you are optmistic or pesimistic. Is the glass half full or empty. Can they ask you question with out feeling stupid. Empowerment works well.

Unders standing yourself as an instructor.

I believe that when you know yourself, as a human being aka the instructor. You can recognize your strengths and weaknesses. This inturn will help you to be more organized and positivre the class. No panic sitiuation. You will be able to prepare for your weaknesses. Be come more confident.

The light bulb

I have had students that just did not get what i was trying to teach them. I used three or four different ways of explaining and showing them, all of a sudden the light comes that aha moment. Love it. The best feeling ever.

Extern success

It's hard for us to motivate an unpaid 240 hour class with night students and they need to work.
