Planning and preparation

Making sure that I am always prepared having the material ready before class starts. Making sure all the media works. Preparing by rehearsing what I will be talking about with the students.

New methods of teaching

I deeply feel that it is important as an instructor to have More then one method in teaching. It can become a bore For you and the students if you just stick to handouts. Maybe doing something like hands on or and activity can spice it up a little

How to cope with awful classrooms

I teach at a culinary school where the tall metal tables are meant for cooking demonstrations, although I teach composition. I am under five feet tall and I find that I often feel at a diminished position of power due to the height of the desks. Next semester, I will be teaching in an even worse classroom that has a huge structural beam that is about three feet by three feet in the middle of my classroom, which will inhibit my ability to make eye contact with my students, and create a sense of inclusion and grouphood. Any suggestions on how to deal with these issues?

Attention span consideration

Presenting course materials in a way to demonstrate the lesson (and to consider attention span) is critical. Studies show the importance of considering the attention span factor (Mizuno et al., 2011). Reference Kei Mizuno, Masaaki Tanaka, Sanae Fukuda, Emi Yamano, Yoshihito Shigihara, Kyoko Imai-Matsumura, Yasuyoshi WatanabeLow (2011). visual information-processing speed and attention are predictors of fatigue in elementary and junior high school students. Classroom Mamagement

My experience as an instructor with over 19 years of experience, management of your class starts from the first day of class. I refer to the terms as setting the pace of the class and expectations.

meeting class on first day

I realize it is key to be prepared for the first class meeting (and all following meetings) but the first one leaves the importance first impression. Being fully prepared is so essential. Studies on peer review instruction notes the essential element of preparedness (Seymour et al., 2013), Reference Seymour, J.E., Almack, K., Kennedy, S., & Froggatt, K. Peer education for advance care planning: volunteers’ perspectives on training and community engagement activitiesHealth Expect. 2013 March; 16(1): 43–55. doi: 10.1111/j.1369-7625.2011.00688.x PMCID: PMC3607415 J

Planning ahead

Planning my lessons for students is vital. Because I sometimes teach and coach doctoral students, I have one-on-one teaching. Thus, I must plan as to tailor the lesson to most benefit the individual student. Individualizing planning to best fit the need of the student can be essential (McDonald et al., 2010). Reference McDonald Connor, C., Ponitz, C., Phillips, B. M., Travis, M., Glasney, S., & Morrisonc, F. J. (2010). First graders' literacy and self-regulation gains: The effect of individualizing student instruction. J Sch Psychol. 48(5): 433–455. J Sch Psychol. doi: 10.1016/j.jsp.2010.06.003 PMCID: PMC2976978 NIHMSID: NIHMS234655

Instructional style

Instructional style really matters. Working on ways to appropriately develop an instructional style is imperative. Studies have indicated that developing proper instructional styles is necessary (Kendall & Schussler, 2012). This module has motivated me to really focus on further developing a suitable instructional style that will be the most beneficial to my students. Reference Kendall, K. D. & Schussler, E. E. (2012). ED 206

This ED has widened my way of thinking of how to show students how to be more effective in the clinical settings. It seems that for the most part it involves how a student learns and that is the way one should approach to teach that student.

using power point and videos

i always use videos in my class because it will let the students to pay attention

using color posters

always give the students project using a colored poster specially in medical field by choosing a disease and they put pictures

animation

for hard learning students i realized that using animations with the power point and then asking questions help

Evaporation

It's very helpful to have a 'last-class review' within the first 10 minutes of the next day's class.

Anyone else disagree?

The course material describes a game where students break into groups and use coins for a game. The assessment/quiz says this does not use intrapersonal skills...I would argue that they need these to communicate their ideas. I would concede that it is the 'least good answer' but let's see who responds.

Active Learning

As a long time instructor I use several different methods of learning. Lecture reinforced with hand on studnet demonstrations, Where I lead the class step by step in preforming a task. Stopping them at certian points to show them a particular item myself.

TEACHING LEARNING STYLES

REMEMERING THAT NOT ALL STUDENTS HAVE THE SAME LEARNING CAPABILITIES.

MAKING A POSITVE FIRST IMPRESSION

HAVING THE SYLLUBUS READY AND INTRODUCING MYSLEF AND LEARNING THE STUDENTS NAMES

Keeping Demonstrations Interesting

It's sometimes hard to keep the attention of my students in the class, especially when computers are directly involved with the lecture. How can I keep my students interested enough that they wont be distracted by other things while on the computer.

How important really is the order in which you do these steps?

How important really is the order in which you do these steps? I tend to do what's natural and not rigidly define how I conduct the first class.

Internet Access

At school we allow students internet access during class. We only block certain cites, and I think students are still distracted by this. Just wondering how many of you block internet access during lectures?
