Overview and Requirements

Why is an overview and requirements very important on the first day of class? The overview will give the instructor a short overview of the course which can be used as a guide when lecturing and help the student in seeing what material will be covered during the course. In addition, an overview will help with discussion of the course goals and objectives, help define your expectations for the students participation, and it serves as a basis for evaluation in the course.

Active Learning

Adults need to be actively involved in the learning process.

testing

One thing I have learned that everyone does not test the same. For some it comes easy, and for some it comes so hard they make them selves sick.

Questions

I like to get the students involved and ask them what kind of questions would they ask if they were giving a test and discuss and role play before making up a test to give.

class perticipation

I make every student know from the first day of class that they will have to perticipate in class for a grade. By the end of class the students are glad they participated. It got them out of their shell, they made new friends and starting to make better grades in other classes.

Professionalism

I have been teaching for over 4 years now and professionalism is so important. I agree that we as instructors must be an example for our students. Students are watching everyday to see how we are going to react to certain situations. We constantly teach them about soft skills in class however when we are not in the school environment they are constantly still watching. Professionalism is important everywhere we go.

Teaching is teaching

Whether you are teaching children or adults they are the same when it comes to learning.

goals

Goals are critical to the students road map

Syllabus

Why is developing a syllabus so important/ I think a syllabus develops the a climate for the class, give the course organization and structure. It serves as a guide or outline for the instructor and conveys a sense of excitement about the course. The students can look at the syllabus and it gives them a brief discription about what is going to be covered in the course.

Boooooooooring lectures

lectures should be interesting and interactive. If not we are realy just talking to walls; especially at 7 am

Learning Styles

I think that it is so important to tailor your teaching styles to the classroom and the particular course that your teaching. Some courses are more hands-on and others require more application type exercises. It is always rewarding when you keep an open mind about accepting change and criticism in order to improve the classroom setting.

Students group

The students group is very importante to see the diversity of the ideas on the group!

IEP pros and cons

As an instructor who deals with students with disabilities and a mother of a child with Asperger's syndrome I find the IEP's to be a negative and more focus should be on a positive note. Again teaching medical students who have to sit for a major certification exam at the end of their courses I feel that bending my teaching styles to accommodate them only sets them up for failure in the end. They may get through the classes because accommodation were made to help them succeed, however there are no accommodations made during the national certification. No one is going to read them the test questions, no extra time is given and when they get out in the real world no one is going to be there to hold their hand and guide them through life.

reading and writing challenges

I understand the concepts here in this module, however I teach Medical students. The absolutely need to know how to spell and spell correctly. I have found that students coming from outside the united states have a hard time with our vowels and silent letters. They spell "HOME" like this "HOM". They spell everything the way it sounds. Writing in a persons medical chart and having typos can be a huge legal issue.

Groups

I have a true problem with the group learning. When I put students in groups and try to balance out the diversity I run into problems with personality and students not contributing or ones who feel over run by others.

floating around classroom

I agree with the comment about floating around the classroom. I use a clicker to forward my power point so I do not feel strapped to the front of the room. I also think it keeps the students on their toes and off the internet and cell phones.

Entusiasm in to the class.

Is it very important to the instructor be entusiam with the clas to keep the students attention?

Is it ok for me to address students in they`re language

I speak a little spanish and i have a population of students that dont understand english that well so i talk to the in spanish is it ok for me to do that?

How many breaks are really needed in class

How many breaks should we allow student to take?

Leading By Example

I myself have a learning disability and find it helpful to share with my students my story. I was able to overcome my learning disability and go on with my education to obtain a masters in nursing. Though this was not easy for me to do, I feel the students can relate to me when I share my story with them. I also am more aware of learning disabilities amoung my students seeing I myself had one. I have found this to have positive outcomes with my students.
