Eye Contact & Smiling Inside/Outside of Classroom

I feel having good eye contact outside of the classroom is extremely effective. The hallways are a great means to continue developing relationships with previous, current and future students. I present a friendly and welcoming facial expressions to acknowledge the students are important to me. They feel respected in and out of the classroom.

Learning Style vs Instructional styles

Learning styles of students and instructional styles of teachers are important aspects that needs considerations in teaching. These are big challenges on the part of the teacher. Firstly, the teacher must be adept in implementing the instructional style he/she is going to use. Secondly, teachers should not just use any instructional style for the sake of variety, but rather use an instructional style that would maximize the achievement of the learning goals set. Example; in teaching skills to be learnt, the best instructional style for me is demonstration. Role play for me is excellent when demonstrating attitude/affective domain in learning.

Classroom Management

One of the skill that a instructor must and should pose is classroom management. As instructor's how does one continue to keep control of the classroom?

Goals

Just about everyone has goals, however, as an instuctor when it comes to the students I think that it is very important to make sure that they are given the essential tools needed to help them achieve their goals. Most students say that the the reason they decided to come to college is so that they can provide a better life for them and their family. If instructor's take the timeout to remember and keep in mind that they were once a student at some college with those same goals as the students they have in their classroom now, then maybe they would continue to work harder to help the student to be successful.

Meeting for the first time

Just like the first day on any job, one is going to be a bit nervous. As an instructor's we have to keep in mind that this is a new experience for the student's and they are as just as nervous. I think a really good way to break that barrier is to come to class early and stand outside the door and welcome and greet the students before they even enter the class room. Also while giving everyone a chance to get settle in, start a conversation about the weather or some hot topic that made the news. This always seem to work and the students don't seem so nervous about being in a new place for the time.

Different learning styles

I think that as an instructor it is very important to understand and realize that no two students are alike and they all have different ways of learning. Getting to know what each student's form of learning method is and how each one retain the information plays a major part as to how well the student will do for that course.

never speak over your students' head

Overcoming Practical Barriers

I teach Anatomy & Physiology and I have such a limited amount of time to get a vast amount of information to the students that I am not sure how to implement activities without leaving out important material in my lectures. My lectures are very active (I don't just talk behind a desk) and I try to engage the students as best I can but I just wish I had a little more time for some "fun" learning interaction. Any suggestions on short active learning strategies?

Meeting those students for the first time

My first time having a group of students I tend to fell just as uneasy as them. Upon entering the class I remind myself what my objective is. I want the students to have a synopsis of the course. Then I begin with notes and explain my notes focusing on key words that they would need to know for their quiz the next day>

Varied Delivery

As instructors, we should try to ensure that we vary our approach and teaching style.

First Day of Class

I appreciate the information in this course related to first day procedure. This is undoubtedly the most important day of the term as the instructor sets the foundation for his or her class.

Importance of using the Syllabi

The importance of using the syllabi and following it is a goal that I try to set every quarter. The reason simply is because students follow it. They expect you as the instructor to follow it. I think it helps prepare them in advance regarding what and how the agenda will be for every class session. We hold students accountable and constantly preach responsibilty. So why not, students should hold instructors accountable as well for our responsibilities as an instructor.

Support

Teachers must do all they can to help students who want to learn succeed.

Success Stories

Success stories generate positive energy which can be shared by everyone.

How much should be used

How much of my work experience be talked about in class?

Where should a problem student be placed

Student that are capable of doing the work with not much direction dont really like to be put in a group with students they feel arent trying to be apartof the lesson or activity, where should the problem student be placed

Storytellers

Why are some instructors very good lecturing? They have the ability to be strong story tellers. This helps keep the students attention, and the instructor will relate the material being studied to an event or story that has taken place in the instructors life. This helps with attention of the students and retention because of the content being expressed in story mode.
