Working with Student Characteristics.

I am a Registrar and see the ups and downs everyday. My problem is more along the lines of how do I keep my instructors motivated to keep working with the more difficult students. The ones that you almost have to "spoon feed" or "babysit"?

Nonverbal Cues

Some personalities are more adept than others at a given stage of development at recognizing these, and their inherent usefulness when consciously and skillfully employed. I vividly remember them even better in retrospect as used by my most talented teachers, and am glad to now be able to revisit them in my mind though only intuitively perceived at first. Thanks.

Students as customers

I agree with the thought of students as customers regardless of how we reword it or paraphrase it takes away from their responsibility of their own learning. I have found that with my students they depend on me doing more giving than them researching and taking ownership.

Effective Motivation Techniques

Using personal stories about one's career has an impact on students. Show students that I once sat where they now sit. I have the content and experience to share with them. I have found that you must be flexible and willing to adapt to the needs of each adult learner and focus on individual.

Why is the development of rapport with students important in teaching?

The student needs to trust the instructor. If they don't understand something, they need to know they can count on the instructor for help. I try for the first two days of class to identify my student by name and to learn something personal about them. I in turn tell them something personal about me. We start a rapport between student and instructor that has been working for me for 19 years.

Instructor Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm is very important and to teach what you love with a passion. Knowing that when I go into the classroom I must have a good attitude and lots of energy. The class usually feeds from my energy. The students then want to participate and are excited about the class, then having effects on retention.

Student Retention involving past circumstances

How do you deal with a situation where students have come from two different classes, with two different instructors during a previous term, who have now been joined together into the next term with a common instructor? These students are of various ages, various levels of instructors due different instructors....it is now obvious in class that they are split on instructional levels as well as social levels.

Classroom environment

I have personally noticed that classroom environment is a key to success. I have been instructing the same 2 classes now for 1 year, and this last term I have had better classes meaning grades and attitudes. The room I was in was small and cramped due to the number of students and equipment/lab space. This last term I had more students but a room that was 2 times the size and a separate lab space. As for myself, I have had a more positive out look on the class and I have seen how this change increased the level of learning.

Customer Services

The students needs someone to listen to the needs and concerns about the situation that they are having during the program and the problems that they are face in the classes or personal life, is important for any staff or faculty member to take the time to listen to the students and comfort them,is not only going to help the school with retention,it also going to help the student to accomplish their goals.

Manage practicipation is important

I believe when a student is involved in class it's assuring to the instructor if the student is paying attention to material that is being taught.

Keeping students focuse is important

Keeping students focuse is important when teaching I feel that the instructor should create different ways to keep students attention.

Age diversity is important in the classroom

I like to recieve view points from different student in different age groups. Espeically when you work on case study.

Confidence and Ability

Postively motivating students using the motivational issues along with the two motivators can ensure great upcoming leaders in this world!

No Pain Just success

Creating atmosphere where the students have power of choice and the option to freely and effectively voice their choices is great wasy to success.

Extrinsic Motivators

I teach a class that is necessary to the field of study that my students are entering but that can be very boring at times. It is an all lecture class and the only participation is discussion or answering questions. Occassionaly I am able to break them into groups to work on certain things together. Any suggestions on how to engage them better?

the lack of motivation in the classroom from one class to another

Majority of students really pay attention to the motivation that an instructor gives and will compare apples to oranges. We are all different in our own way how can we work together to change this with so little time in the classroom?

Motivation

Motivation in class is important. It is a skill for learning

Motivating your students

Motivating your students takes effort and you must love what you do because if you dont, it will show. You must also be prepared and show that you care.

Keeping your focus on your students

Keeping your focus on your students is vital to their success and motivation of the classroom.

Student Success

We have had alot of students who were offered employment during their externship. I have a picture posted of those students who attended our PT program who are now successfully working in the field, along with a brief explanation of when they graduated and with whom they are now employed. My current students see this everyday and it reminds them of their ultimate goal, employment. Thats what its all about really is preparing them to be a future canidate for employment as a Pharmacy Technician.
